Australian Antarctic Program Partnership
- Full time, fixed term (3 years)
- Possibility of an extension
- Based in Hobart, Waterfront IMAS Building
The AAPP brings together government and non-government entities to deliver and lead a significant part of the national Antarctic science program. The partnership is led by the University of Tasmania (UTAS), and includes the Australian Antarctic Division, CSIRO Oceans and Atmosphere, Geoscience Australia, the Bureau of Meteorology, the Tasmanian State Government and Australia’s Integrated Marine Observing System.
The Opportunity
The Research Associate – Glaciological Remote Sensing position will contribute to the Australian Antarctic Program Partnership (AAPP), a new research program funded through the Antarctic Science Collaboration Initiative of the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science and will lead analysis of legacy data collected during the last few seasons of the Antarctic field work on the Totten and Sørsdal Glaciers, including remote sensing data, radar, seismic, ApRES, and GPS data.
Key Accountabilities:
- Contribute to the wider group activities with the provision of expertise in the analysis and acquisition of remote sensing data from satellites and other remote sensing products, and their analysis with available observations and model output towards meeting the key goals of Theme 1.
- Investigate satellite and other remote sensing data as a means of deriving information on key ice sheet, ice shelf conditions and sea ice parameters, and test the approaches using available model output and in-situ observations.
- Contribute remote sensing analysis and expertise towards the development of an improved Australian capability in ice shelf, ice sheet and sea ice analysis.
- Lead and contribute to the publication of high-impact research papers that address key current knowledge gaps and areas of low confidence in our understanding of Antarctic ice sheet and sea ice, their change and variability, and key processes involved, and present results at meetings.
- Assist with the training of research students and technical staff:
- Participate as a member of supervisory teams for students; and
- Provide written protocols for technical staff as needed.
Your Application
To be successful in the role, your application will need to demonstrate;
- A PhD in glaciology or related discipline, including a strong background in remote sensing of the Antarctic cryosphere.
- Demonstrated high-level ability in the processing and analysis of satellite and other remote sensing data, ranging from visible to radar.
- Demonstrated ability to work with in-situ observations and model output and experience in leading successful field campaigns.
- Demonstrated track-record in multi-disciplinary research (e.g., interaction between sea ice, ice shelf, ice sheet, ocean and atmosphere).
- Evidence of ability to carry out independent research leading to publications in scientific literature.
