About our Team            

The School of Social Sciences offers undergraduateand postgraduate taught programmes and we have a strong international focus in both our teaching and research. We have excellent links and collaborative partnerships with leading business and language schools all over the world. The primary focus of the Department of Languages & Intercultural Studies (LINCS) is in the field of translation and interpreting studies, and we have developed a very distinctive profile in this area over almost 50 years. Whilst interpreting and translation remain at the forefront of our teaching and research, other areas of focus include sign language and cultural studies. LINCS houses two research centres: the Centre for Translation & Interpreting Studies in Scotland(CTISS) and the Intercultural Research Centre (IRC).

Detailed Description            

LINCS offers taught courses for sign language students in the undergraduate Languages, Interpreting & Translation programme, the European Masters in Sign Language Interpreting, and British Sign Language (BSL) elective courses at beginners and post-beginners levels. The BSL team also conducts research on a range of topics related to sign language policy, linguistics,translation and interpreting, culture and heritage, and supervises PhD students on similar related topics.

Key duties and responsibilities          

LINCS is now looking to recruit a full-time member of staff to join the BSL team, either on a Teaching & Research contract, or on a Teaching & Scholarship contract. The new staff member will contribute primarily to teaching British Sign Language and sign linguistics courses at various levels. You will also be expected to contribute to courses on deaf culture and interpreting and translation across a range of programmes, and will be required to be involved in relevant administration tasks.   

LINCS 

Education, qualifications and experience            

The new staff member must have native/near-native competence in BSL, have expertise in teaching BSL and have experience in course coordination. You may also have a track record of research publications and international academic conference presentations. The applicant will ideally have competence in International Sign, knowledge of UK national and vocational BSL qualifications and strong networks throughout the UK Deaf community. The applicant must have a postgraduate university qualification in a relevant field and ideally must have completed, or be on track to complete, a research degree in a relevant field. You should also ideally have an advanced sign language teaching or generic teaching qualification, and experience of teaching and researching in a sign language interpreter training programme. A qualification as an interpreter/translator would be advantageous.
