The Asian Languages and Cultures Academic Group (ALC AG) at the National Institute of Education in Singapore comprises the Chinese, Malay, and Tamil Divisions. ALC’s vision is to be a world class centre of excellence for Asian studies, especially in languages, cultures and education. We aim to nurture excellent teacher-researchers devoted to the development and promotion of mother tongue language education, Asian values and cultures as pillars of Singapore’s national identity and harmony. Mother tongue language teachers who enrol in our programmes can expect to receive a firm academic foundation with current knowledge in education research.  ALC’s research places emphasis on high-impact interdisciplinary content, pedagogical innovation, challenging existing theories and extending the prevalent boundary of Asian studies. 

ALC AG invites suitably qualified applicants to apply for Assistant/Associate Professor positions in the Chinese Language and Culture Division. The Chinese division of ALC provides training for Chinese language teachers through both pre-service and professional development programmes in Singapore. 

Requirements 

  • Applicants must have a doctoral degree in Chinese applied linguistics/Chinese literature, second language acquisition, educational assessment and pedagogy or other appropriate field allied to teaching Chinese as a second language;
  • Native or near-native competence in oral and written Chinese and English;
  • Extensive experience and expertise in the teaching and assessment of Chinese as a second language;
  • Expertise in bilingual studies, translation and contrastive Chinese-English linguistics (preferred);
  • Expertise in teaching Content Knowledge, such as Chinese phonology, grammar, lexicon (preferred);
  • Familiarity with the Singapore curriculum and the Singapore education system (preferred).
  • Possess a Diploma/Degree in Education (preferred).

Responsibilities
Successful candidates will be expected to 

  • Teach undergraduate and postgraduate level courses in Chinese (subject knowledge and related pedagogy in Chinese language and literature);
  • Supervise and mentor undergraduate trainee teachers in their school teaching practice; 
  • Supervise Masters and PhD dissertation work;
  • Lead or collaborate in funded research projects, as well as maintain a strong research and publication record;
  • Undertake any administrative duties required as exigency of service.
