Assistant Professor in Historical Archaeology (c. AD/CE 1500-1900)
Vacancy Reference
 ARCH20-1

As one of the most outstanding Departments of Archaeology in the UK, we have developed a world-leading reputation for excellence in teaching, research and the employability of our students. We are regularly ranked one of the top two Archaeology departments in the UK (e.g. Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014, The Guardian University Guide 2019, Complete University Guide 2019) and one of the top six globally (World University QS rankings 2019).

Our academics are shaping the future of our discipline with world-leading research that spans all aspects of archaeology, from the local to the global and the social to scientific. Our distinctive approach to research-led teaching ensures our programmes are cutting edge and intellectually stimulating for our 400+ students, while our state-of the art laboratories specializing in materials analysis, artefact conservation, isotopes, DNA, microscopy/geoarchaeology, informatics, human remains, and thermoluminescence support our students in achieving outstanding and original research at all levels.

We are building upon our strengths by appointing a talented and ambitious Assistant Professor in the field of Historical Archaeology. Expanding on our current research and teaching strengths in medieval and post-medieval archaeology, the new postholder will develop world-class research and teaching in the field of historical archaeology, defined here the archaeology of any historical society worldwide from c. AD/CE 1500 to 1900. We particularly welcome applications from those working in the fields of historical and social archaeology, specialising in North America and/or the West Indies and/or Africa, or the Baltic World, with a research and teaching track record in themes such as colonialism and slavery; transatlantic connections, trade and commercialisation; or industrialisation.

The successful candidate will pursue research that is world leading in terms of originality, significance and rigour, commensurate with the Department of Archaeology’s continuing emphasis on international excellence, and demonstrated by outstanding publications. They will bring experience and ambition in terms of seeking out national and international funding opportunities and develop research impact beyond the Institution. They will also develop and pursue international research collaborations to further enhance the Department’s world reputation in historical archaeology.
Bringing excellent communication skills and teaching experience, the successful candidate will take the lead on developing and delivering our new undergraduate programme, the BA (Hons) Archaeology of the Historic World.

They will contribute more broadly as well to teaching and training across our six undergraduate programmes and will develop unique opportunities for practical and applied training for both our undergraduate and taught postgraduate programmes and contribute to our MA in Archaeology. Experience in delivering training in the field, via excavation, standing buildings and/or landscape survey or collections-based projects is also essential. Developing our vibrant research postgraduate community, by attracting students of exceptional calibre from Britain and abroad to study with us at Durham, is also desirable.

The successful candidate will be expected to participate in the collegial and administrative activities of the Department and demonstrate leadership with an academic context.
