The Faculty of Arts invites applications for the position of UNIVERSITY LECTURER for a term from 1 October 2019 to 31 December 2022 (locum tenens). The field of the position is Nordic studies.

Nordic studies belongs to the discipline of area and cultural studies and is part of the Centre for Nordic Studies (CENS). The discipline examines how people living in a specific area experience the world, organise their society and see themselves as sharing a culture. In addition, the mission of CENS is to explore how the Nordic countries are perceived and understood by the global community and which elements constitute the Nordic brand in both space and time.

The duties of the university lecturer in Nordic studies include the provision of master’s level teaching, the supervision and examination of theses and dissertations, as well as research in the field. Duties requiring good cooperation skills include participating in the planning and development of teaching together with the other staff of the department, degree programmes and discipline. The appointee will conduct research in the field and contribute to its development. In addition, the university lecturer is expected to apply for external research funding.

According to the Regulations of the University of Helsinki, an appointee to a university lectureship shall hold an applicable doctoral degree and be able to provide high-quality teaching based on research and to supervise theses and dissertations

When assessing the qualifications of applicants, attention shall be paid to academic qualifications and merits, such as publications and experience of research projects, as well as teaching and supervision experience, pedagogical skills, the ability to produce learning material and, if necessary, a demonstration of teaching skills.

According to the Government Decree on Universities, university lecturers are required to be proficient in Finnish. They must also have at least a satisfactory command of spoken and written Swedish. Foreign citizens, non-native Finnish citizens or citizens who have not been educated in Finnish or Swedish may be exempted from this requirement without a separate application.

2. A report (max. 5 pages) on the applicant’s teaching expertise
3. A numbered list of publications, highlighting the five publications most relevant for the present position
4. An informal report (max. 3 pages) on the applicant’s scholarly activities, including success in obtaining research funding and the applicant’s specialisation in the area of art history
