The Department of Engineering at Durham University seeks to appoint a talented individual to the role of Assistant Professor in Experimental Radio Communications Engineering. We are a General Engineering Department recognised as being one of the very best in the UK with a reputation for excellence in teaching, research and employability of our students. In the REF2014 exercise, 90% of the Engineering outputs were graded 3* or 4*, and Durham was ranked 4th in the UK for impact in the General Engineering unit of assessment. The Department is committed to an ethos of research-led teaching at all levels of our taught programmes and is ranked 5th in the UK for General Engineering in the Complete University Guide 2020. Durham was recently ranked 2nd in Engineering behind only Cambridge, in the Institute for Fiscal Studies report on the difference in graduate earnings by university choice.

We welcome applications from electronic and communications engineers with research and teaching interests, which include the experimental aspects of radio communications engineering, in particular radio propagation. The Engineering Department has an established track record of excellence in radio communications engineering research and has excellent facilities and experimental equipment in this area, which include state of the art radio channel measurement sounders and a large anechoic chamber. The successful candidate will be expected to engage in research that will drive the need for the Department to continue to invest in and further develop its experimental facilities for radio communications engineering research. Candidates are expected to be either already professionally qualified as a Chartered Engineer, or able to demonstrate ability and desire to become Chartered.

The Engineering Department’s research activities are grouped around 3 Research Challenge areas (www.dur.ac.uk/engineering/research/). This post aligns with our Sustainable Infrastructure Research Challenge and the Centre for Communication Systems with the opportunity to interact with researchers from our Future Energy Systems and Next Generation Materials and Microsystems Challenge areas. Infrastructure is one of the 5 “Foundations” of the UK’s Industrial Strategy. The Government has set aside £31 billion for investments in transport, housing and digital infrastructure, making this very much a national priority. The Department is also interested in applicants with practical/industrial experience of communications engineering.
