About the opportunity 

The University of Sydney School of Architecture, Design and Planning is seeking to appoint an Associate Lecturer / Lecturer in Audio and Acoustics. We expect the appointee to develop a strong research program in acoustics as it relates to the built environment, and to take responsibility for unit of study coordination, lecturing, and tutorial classes in the School’s undergraduate and postgraduate programs. You will have a demonstrated ability to (i) undertake cutting-edge research and (ii) teach at undergraduate and/or post-graduate levels.

Applicants will have an emerging record of research, demonstrated by peer reviewed research outcomes and research funding, either independently or as part of a team, as appropriate for the level of appointment sought. They will also have the capacity to provide high-level service to, and collaboration with, industry most relevant to their area/s of expertise. They will already have gained experience in higher education including teaching and learning, have a strong interest for research-led teaching, and the capacity to attract and supervise outstanding postgraduate research students and professional research staff.

Your role in this position will be to:

• Teach in the Audio and Acoustics units of the Master of Architectural Science, as well as the Bachelor of Architecture and Environments. Teaching responsibilities will include the coordination and delivery in whole or part of selected core and elective units of study;
• Supervise high-quality PhD candidates;
• Build research collaborations within the School, the university and beyond, publish in high quality international outlets, and apply for research funding to develop your research area.

Acoustics has long been an area of teaching and research in the Sydney School of Architecture, Design and Planning. Acoustics is one of the four streams of the Master of Architectural Science. Audio and acoustics teaching features in other degrees of the School, including the Bachelor of Architecture and Environments, and the Master of Interaction Design and Electronic Arts.

Acoustics research is supported by exemplary facilities. The School has an acoustics laboratory, which houses an anechoic room, reverberant room, 196-loudspeaker hemispherical array, and substantial equipment for laboratory and field measurements in architectural and audio acoustics. It also has an audio teaching studio suitable for sound recording, production, and rendering using various spatial audio techniques. Other facilities, including the School’s Indoor Environmental Quality Lab (IEQ Lab) and Digital Modelling and Fabrication Lab (DMAF), have supported research in audio and acoustics.
