About the position

A PhD position in the “Alpakka” project - a Norwegian Research Council funded collaboration project between Hydro, Metallco, Infinitum, Norsk Metallgjenvinning, Kavli, NTNU and SINTEF, is available at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. The project aims to prevent >40.000 tonnes of Al in food packaging going to waste incineration annually, saving Norway more than 1.5 TWh of energy and several hundred thousand tonnes of CO2 emissions.

The PhD research is focused on achieving a better understanding and further development of the recycling process for complex aluminium materials, in order to obtain high metal yield and quality of recycled metal. The research will be conducted in close collaboration with SINTEF Industry and the other partners in the Alpakka consortium.

Qualification requirements

The PhD-position's main objective is to qualify for work in research positions. The applicant must hold a MSc degree or equivalent in materials science/material physics, metallurgy, chemistry/chemical engineering or nanotechnology. It is also required a strong academic background in industry of academia or equivalent education with a grade of B or better in terms of NTNU’s grading scale. Applicants with no letter grades from previous studies must have an equally good academic foundation. Applicants who are unable to meet these criteria may be considered only if they can document that they are particularly suitable candidates for education leading to a PhD degree.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, postdoctor and research assistant

We search for a person that is curious, creative and can work independently and as part of a research team. The applicant should have good communication skills and must be able to collaborate with BSc/MSc students as well as researchers in SINTEF and the industry connected to the project.

Salary and conditions

PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 449 400 before tax per year. From the salary, 2 % is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The appointment has a duration of 3 years with the possibility of 1 year extension with 25% teaching duties in agreement with the department. (To undertake the teaching duties, it is a requirement that the candidate speaks Norwegian or another Scandinavian language).

As a PhD candidate, you undertake to participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period. A condition of appointment is that you are in fact qualified for admission to the PhD programme within three months.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criterias in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU.
