This Research Associate position is part of a project funded by the Wellcome Trust which will develop a soft robotic implantable larynx device. The goal is to restore breathing, swallowing and vocalization in patients that have had their larynx removed, for example due to laryngeal cancer.
This research position will include the design, development and evaluation of prototype replacement devices and assisting with pre-clinical tests of the devices. This is expected to include soft robotic actuators, smart materials, electro-active polymers, active compliant structures, soft robotic mechanisms and 3d fabrication; particular strengths of the Bristol Soft Robotics Research Group.
Based in the Bristol Robotic Laboratory, the largest centre for multi-disciplinary robotics research in the UK, and the Department of Engineering Mathematics at the University of Bristol, this is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic team in soft robotic and compliant medical robotics led by Prof Jonathan Rossiter and Dr Andrew Conn. You will also work closely with world experts in the fields of ENT surgery and bio-compatible materials at Royal Nose, Ear and Throat Hospital, London, University College London and Imperial College.
You will hold (or will be expected to obtain soon) a strong PhD in a discipline relevant to the project. In addition to a strong research track record you will also have excellent communication skills, and the enthusiasm to work in a friendly multi-disciplinary team.
It is anticipated that interviews will take place soon after application closure, and the anticipated start will be as soon as possible thereafter.
