Position Description

The Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) seeks applicants for full-time Postdoctoral Fellows with the SEAS Learning Incubator. The mission of the SEAS Learning Incubator is innovation of educational pedagogy in engineering and/or science.

The position requires a combined expertise in a specific scientific discipline with in-depth knowledge of teaching methods and research on learning. The postdoctoral fellows will collaborate with SEAS LInc Faculty Fellows to develop and implement course transformation (design/ redesign of an existing course of design of a new course), as well as provide background research on teaching and learning; identify evidence based educational practices; and design assessment instruments to measure learning and gather comprehensive data on student learning and thinking.

Expected responsibilities include:

  • Develop learning objectives, assessment instruments, and pedagogical approaches for design/redesign of courses
  • Align in-class and out-of-class activities to course learning objectives
  • Implement and adapt novel pedagogies
  • Develop course assessment measures of student learning (pre/post-tests of student conceptual understanding)
  • Coordinate and implement the pilot trial of newly designed/redesigned courses
  • Provide faculty with feedback and coaching advice based on direct observation, student interviews, surveys, etc.
  • Present experiences and research findings to the Harvard SEAS community
  • Publish journal articles on research findings, and present at research conferences and department seminars (in collaboration with faculty members )
  • Serve as a resource to faculty on issues related to pedagogy. Keep abreast of all current relevant research.

Basic Qualifications

A Ph.D. in applied mathematics; computer science; physics; various areas of engineering including biomedical, electrical, environmental and mechanical engineering; or science education.

Additional Qualifications

Applicants should have a well-articulated interest in innovative curriculum transformation and research and prior involvement with such activities, such as experience in the development of curriculum, online teaching, project management, and familiarity with current pedagogical research.
