Postdoctoral Research Associate

Department :
 Department of Geography

Based at King's Strand Campus in Central London, the post will support further development of the Global Fire Assimilation System (GFAS), a state-of-the-art landscape fire smoke emissions estimation system currently operated in real-time as part of the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service. GFAS uses satellite Fire Radiative Power (FRP) data to deliver daily, global smoke emissions information to CAMS, as detailed in Kaiser et al. (2012). The work has both high visibility and the potential for very significant impact as the results may be implemented operationally within Copernicus CAMS. A consortium of partners will deliver the overall updated GFAS system, with King's leading.

Working within the Research Group led by Professor Martin Wooster and with the lead GFAS developer at King's Dr Tianran Zhang, a key foci will be on accuracy assessments and other requirements that will enable new polar-orbiting and geostationary satellite FRP data steams to be used within GFAS, alongside new information on fire-related biome classifications, smoke emissions factors, non-fire FRP signals, and flaming/smouldering fire discrimination etc. The newly updated GFAS outputs will be available for use in science studies, and the post holder will collaborate with other research group members on these aspects.

Applicants should have experience in handling satellite remote sensing datasets and derived products, be comfortable writing well documented Python code, and be able produce high quality outputs and reports to deadlines. Relevant research experience is highly beneficial. Please use the person specification in the job pack when writing your personal statement. Applications without personal statements will not be considered. The postholder will be required to start by July 2019.

This post will be offered on a fixed-term contract for 24 months.

This is a full-time post - 100% full time equivalent.

The selection process will include a panel interview and an assessment.
