Role Description

The School of Aerospace, Transport and Manufacturing leads in delivering Cranfield’s Mission for the thematic areas of Aerospace, Transport and Manufacturing. The School is committed to leading in its areas of expertise through investing in world class staff and facilities over the long term. The School of Aerospace, Transport and Manufacturing (SATM) is a leading provider of postgraduate level engineering education, research and technology support to individuals and organisations.

Development and maintenance of first-class teaching and industrial-scale research facilities are key to delivering the University strategy, alongside the need for strong and flexible technical support which enables academic staff and researchers to deliver contracts to quality, time and cost, and to deliver teaching informed by our research.  The facilities are distinct and add significantly to our uniqueness.

Skilled technicians are crucial to our success. We are therefore seeking to attract highly motivated individuals who are keen to develop into skilled technicians through a formal apprenticeship. You will have the ability and desire to work as part of a team to provide a premier technical provision to the school’s stakeholders, working in partnership with technical colleagues of all levels to ensure effective operation of facilities as a whole.

This position has a significant training requirement. The role requires an open mind for future development in all areas. It is anticipated that this role will support a variety of work in different environments. By the end of your apprenticeship you should have developed sufficient skills to join a professional body and become a registered Technician, making a valued and significant contribution to the University.

You will have achieved up to 5 GCSE’s at grade C and above including in Science, Mathematics and English (or equivalent level qualifications or relevant experience). You must be prepared to enrol for a course of study leading to an approved qualification.

We are an institutional member of HEaTED (Higher Education and Technical Education and Development).  This membership enables our technical and specialist staff to access a range of specialist workshops and events as well as their own virtual learning environment online. It also provides the opportunity for our technical staff to become part of the national community of technical specialists.

For an informal discussion regarding this position, please contact Ian Hakon, Head of Technical Support Services (T): 01234 750111 ext. 8297, (E): i.n.hakon@cranfield.ac.uk

At Cranfield, we value Diversity and Inclusion, and aim to create and maintain a culture in which everyone can work and study together harmoniously with dignity and respect and realise their full potential. We actively consider flexible working options such as part-time, compressed or flexible hours and/or an element of homeworking, and commit to exploring the possibilities for each role.

As part of our commitment to support and develop Technical staff across the University, we have now also become a founding signatory of the Science Council's Technician Commitment. This is a sector wide, collaborative initiative led by the Science Council and supported by the 'Technicians Make It Happen' campaign, to ensure visibility, recognition, career development and sustainability for technicians working in higher education and research.
