Job Details

UNSW is currently implementing a ten year strategy to 2025 and our ambition for the next decade is nothing less than to establish UNSW as Australia’s global university. We aspire to this in the belief that a great university, which is a global leader in discovery, innovation, impact, education and thought leadership, can make an enormous difference to the lives of people in Australia and around the world.

Following extensive consultation in 2015, we identified three strategic priority areas. Firstly, a drive for academic excellence in research and education. Universities are often classified as ‘research intensive’ or ‘teaching intensive’. UNSW is proud to be an exemplar of both. We are among a limited group of universities worldwide capable of delivering research excellence alongside the highest quality education on a large scale. Secondly, a passion for social engagement, which improves lives through advancing equality, diversity, open debate and economic progress. Thirdly, a commitment to achieving global impact through sharing our capability in research and education in the highest quality partnerships with institutions in both developed and emerging societies. We regard the interplay of academic excellence, social engagement and global impact as the hallmarks of a great, forward-looking 21st century university.

To achieve this ambition we are attracting the very best academic and professional staff to play leadership roles in our organisation.

At UNSW Arts & Social Sciences we explore big ideas, create new knowledge, and tackle critical social issues. Our defining purpose, as a Faculty, is to promote education and research in the Humanities and Social Sciences. We are one of the most energetic and socially engaged faculties of our kind.

Positioned as one of Australia’s top three research faculties in the Humanities and Social Sciences, we have an enviable research environment and culture, generating research with real social impact and genuine community engagement

UNSW Arts & Social Sciences includes breath and diversity of study options not found in any other single faculty amongst the Group of Eight. Our flagship Bachelor of Arts (BA) program, for example, offers over 35 areas of study and is the degree most often combined with other programs at UNSW.

Our Scholarship deepens understanding of humanity, of social institutions, and of diverse cultures. Our research enriches public debate and enhances policy formation, both within Australia and internationally.

The School of Social Sciences, in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, is an exceptional community of scholars who are at the forefront of a wide range of social science disciplines and professions. The School has two Clusters – the Governance & Global Change Cluster comprises Politics & International Relations and Development Studies, while the Social Inquiry Cluster includes Criminology, Social Research & Policy, Social Work and Sociology & Anthropology. The School’s academics contribute expert opinion and scholarly knowledge to many policy fields and are involved in the delivery of unique programs with a strong emphasis on work-integrated learning and preparing students for employment.

The School of Social Sciences is currently seeking a new Head of School. The Head of School plays a key role in facilitating delivery of the UNSW 2025 Strategy’s strategic priorities of academic excellence, social engagement and global impact. Marked by deep intellectual leadership, the successful candidate should bring academic credibility in an appropriate discipline, combined with breadth of academic vision, strategic thinking, and demonstrable experience leading and inspiring teams in an innovative, research-intensive environment. They will be able to support the development of academic staff at all levels (including early career academics), develop partnerships both within and external to the School, and drive diversity and inclusion within the School.
