General Summary:

Johns Hopkins University seeks a highly collaborative, innovative, forward-thinking, strategic thought leader in student well-being to serve in the newly created role of Director of Student Well-Being. This leader is tasked with designing, directing and implementing well-being initiatives as well as cataloging, coordinating, and evaluating programming occurring across the Homewood Campus. Along with campus partners in Student Affairs, Health and Wellness, Academe and Communications & Marketing, this professional is responsible for advancing a vibrant campus wide culture of student well-being.

 The University recently received the recommendations of a University Wide Mental Health and Well-Being Task Force. A core responsibility of this position will be the effective implementation of recommendations specific to improving student (both undergraduate and graduate) well-being on the Homewood campus. Ability to implement multi-faceted and holistic pro-active programming that helps reduce stress, anxiety, depression, relationship struggles, academic stressors, sleep dysfunction and loneliness and increase resilience, coping strategies, self-care skills, happiness – well-being generally is the expectation. This position will serve on the Homewood-Peabody Well-Being Working Group and is expected to assist with the leadership of the group.

 The Director of Student Well-Being will respond to the unique challenges highlighted in the Mental Health Task Force report facing subpopulations of Hopkins students, including but not limited to racial, gender and sexual minorities as well as students with disabilities.

 In an effort to better publicize and connect our students to well-being programming and messaging, the Director of Student Well-Being will have a comprehensive and collaborative working relationship with the Student Wellness Communications Specialist.

 Reporting to the Senior Associate Dean of Students, the Director of Student Well-Being is positioned to have a transformational impact on the students of the Homewood campus by embracing a public health approach, incorporating evidence-based practices (while assessing their effectiveness on our campus), fostering an environment where mental health is de-stigmatized and focusing on the specific well-being needs of OUR students.   

Essential Job Functions:

  • Establish departmental priorities and implement campus wide programs and services informed by evidence based research and surveys to our students.
  • Develop, implement and evaluate a comprehensive and collaborative student wellness program.
  • Hire, lead, direct, train and evaluate team of health promotions and wellness professionals of 4 along with assist in supervision of graduate interns.
  • Manage an annual budget.
  • Collaborate with campus offices and others resources regarding any issues that may affect the physical wellbeing of students.
  • Represent the Student Wellness and Community Engagement Office at College Open Houses, and Student and Parent Orientation to discuss wellness related concerns, identify options, and follow up as needed.

Education:

  • Master’s Degree required – preferably in public health, higher education, health promotions, social work or psychology.  

Experience:

  • At least seven (7) years’ experience in wellness/well-being programming, preferably in a higher education context or age specific context (young adult).
  • Strong knowledge and integrated understanding of the role of diversity, multiculturalism, and social justice in the college environment.
  • Must be collaborative, innovative, passionate and strategic with an orientation toward results.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are needed.
  • Previous supervisory experience preferred.

 Additional Information:

  • The Director must plan to live within 30 minutes driving distance of campus and will be included in the Dean of Student Life on-call rotation as a secondary responder.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
