Job Details

About the opportunity

We are seeking to appoint a Professor of Urban Infrastructures, with a specific focus on Urban Microclimatic Control (UMC). The focus of the role will be to develop a systemic research programme into innovative socio-technical urban responses to the challenge of living with climate change and resource security.

The successful applicant will examine the specific drivers for, the emergence of new techniques and practices of, and the socio-spatial implications of, microclimate management. We are especially interested in research to understand the interrelations between techniques that produce controlled environments that seek to replicate outdoor environments inside, and the transmutation of such techniques to outside microclimates. Empirically the programme will focus on innovations being developed, trialed and tested in exemplar urban contexts, in one or more of the following urban domains: human occupation, resource conversation and food/agriculture.

Your role in this position will be to:

  • develop a systemic research programme into innovative socio-technical urban responses to the challenge of living with climate change and resource security;
  • build research collaborations within the School, the university and beyond, publish in high quality international outlets, and apply for research funding to develop your research area.

About you

It is expected that applicants will have an outstanding research track record (demonstrated by high-impact research outcomes, an international profile and reputation, and a record of successful applications for competitive grants). They will have a well-defined research agenda focused on urban socio-technical change, urban infrastructure networks, urban resource security and be able to demonstrate some knowledge of the infrastructures of microclimate management and the use of automation and robotics technologies in such contexts. They will also have a demonstrated track record of research leadership and collaboration with industry and institutional stakeholders most relevant to their area/s of expertise.

The appointee’s international ambitions for their own work will be matched by their ambition to consolidate the School’s reputation as an international centre for research that makes a significant contribution to the field and addresses real- world problems.

Term and remuneration

The appointment is part-time for a period of 2 years, subject to completion of a satisfactory probation and confirmation period for new appointees, and a competitive remuneration package will be negotiated.

How to apply

All applications must be submitted via the University of Sydney careers website.  For more information on the position and how to apply, visit sydney.edu.au/recruitment and search by the reference number 027/0119F.

Closing date: 11.30pm (AEST) Monday 22 April 2019
