Position Summary

As a Research Assistant, you will work on the Australian Research Council Linkage Program Project "Next generation space weather forecasts"; a joint project between RMIT University, the Bureau of Meteorology and Boston College. You will be responsible to conduct research work in the areas of space and ionospheric physics that is focused on obtaining better understanding of the impact of space weather on Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) applications. Coming into this position, you will be require to analyse a range of ionosphere/magnetosphere observation data and its techniques, and also the use of advanced models of the near-Earth space environment. In addition, you will be responsible to lead, manage and deliver in the day-to-day operation of research work as well as participate in project reporting, preparation of project meeting and etc.

Roles and Responsibilities

• Work independently as well as collaboratively with the team in contributing to quality research showcasing research areas outputs publications, development of new research initiatives, presentation of research findings at conferences and forums and contribute to competitive research funding applications
• Manage research project timelines and also ensure research reports meet compliance requirements
• Initiate and contribute in various research development strategies to ensure that they align to University and School research objectives
• Assist in the supervision of higher degree by research candidates

Skills and Experience Required

• PhD or equivalent in space physics area or related field and/or relevant working experience in the field of ionospheric and space physics work
• Demonstrated technical competency in the field ionospheric and space physics, and a solid understanding of the various space science instrumentation, observation techniques i.e. GNSS Radio Occultation and knowledge of other space data and state-of-the-art space environment models
• Excellent numerical analysis and experience in operating software in both Windows and Linux environment as well as other software development skills using Fortran, IDL, Python, Matlab or C/C++
• Ability to manage and plan time effectively and efficiently to conduct innovative research
• Proven experience in competitive grant application and project management
• Passion and ability to build strong relationships across all levels of professional staff within the organisation, and equip with strong technical report writing and verbal communications
