About the opportunity 

We are looking for a proactive Research Assistant who will support research projects investigating frontotemporal dementia and motor neurone syndromes. You will function as part of a multidisciplinary research clinic team, assisting in the conduct of clinical research projects and the functioning of the research clinic.

You will be expected to coordinate activities associated with the ForeFront research projects such as patient recruitment, carrying out assessments, data collection and data entry. The role requires significant patient interactions and undertaking clinical research assessments focused on clinical, cognitive and functional status as well as administration duties associated with the research projects and the research clinic.

A major focus of the position is to coordinate the Motor Neurone Disease biomarker and Brain Donor program including discussing brain donation with patients, recruiting participants, collecting bloods samples, liaising with the multidisciplinary research team and participating in the monthly on call roster for notification of brain donor deaths.

• Tertiary qualifications, preferably in nursing or allied health care and demonstrated interest in neuroscience or clinical research
• experience with brain or tissue donation and experience with neurological conditions
• certificate for venepuncture (or willingness to train)
• advanced word processing and data management skills with experience using Redcap

The ideal candidate will have excellent and tactful communication skills. They will have a proactive attitude, strong problem solving skills and the ability to use initiative and exercise sound judgement and ability to prioritise workload during busy periods and manage change.

About us

The Brain and Mind Research Centre is a Multi-Faculty Research and Education Centre with participation from the Faculties of Medicine, Health Science and Science in particular. Its focus is on research and related activities to reduce the impacts of mental health, brain and neurological disorders on the community. The research assistant will be working in the context of the ForeFront project with Bushell Chair of Neurology, Prof Matthew Kiernan’s research clinic and research team located at the Brain and Mind Research Centre and Prof Glenda Halliday of the Sydney Brain Bank.

The Research Assistant will be responsible for the Motor Neurone Disease Biomarker and Brain Donor program including recruiting participants, performing assessments, collating data and managing multiple databases, performing monthly on call duties and communicating with the Brain Donor team. They will have direct interactions with patients of the research clinic and assist the clinical nurse consultant and research team with assessments including performing phlebotomy and laboratory procedures, data collection, data entry, report writing and ad hoc administrative tasks associated with the various research projects and the clinic.
