Position Description

The Center for Communicable Disease Dynamics and the Department of Epidemiology at Harvard School of Public Health in Boston is seeking a postdoctoral research fellow for an 8-month long position (with possible renewal for another 6 months to one year, starting February 1st 2014 if possible).

We are conducting a study on the spatial ecology and dynamics of polio in Nigeria, with the specific aim of measuring the impact of human mobility on transmission dynamics. The project will include processing and analyzing anonymous mobile phone data and conducting spatial infectious disease models of polio transmission and control in Nigeria.

The successful applicant will be involved in i) analyzing mobile phone data from Nigeria to understand human mobility, ii) mapping our mobility estimates to settlements, and iii) analyzing the phylogenetics of polio viruses in the region, and iv) developing a dynamical spatially-explicit model of polio transmission and control.

Basic Qualifications

Applicants must have a PhD in quantitative or computational science, including bioinformatics or biological sciences, since the project will require experience in programming and managing large data sets, as well as statistical and mathematical analyses. Excellent written and verbal communication in English is required. An infectious disease epidemiology background is also preferred, although not required. This project will require travel to Nigeria.
