Occupational Summary:
 
The Executive Director, Development for Duke Cancer Institute, reports to the Senior Executive Director for Duke Children’s and Duke Cancer Institute, and works closely with the Executive Director of the DCI and other leadership in Duke Cancer Institute and with faculty, colleagues and constituents.
 
The position is responsible for the Major Gift Program in Duke Cancer Institute Program. The position will be responsible for supervising two or three Major Gift Officers and for coordination of additional development services needed within Duke Health Development and Alumni Affairs (DHDAA) to develop and support successful fundraising.
 
Work Performed:
 
Strategic Planning and Program Implementation (30%)

  • Create and implement fundraising vision and strategy for DCI, and the divisions within DCI, to support each area and also in support of collaborative, multidisciplinary opportunities across departments.
  • Integrate and oversee the development goals, process and reporting for the fundraising activity within the DCI Major Gift Program.
  • Create and implement a comprehensive development plan for fundraising that includes gifts from individuals, foundations and corporate sources.
  • Define and communicate fundraising priorities with the faculty for DCI, in consultation with the Senior Executive Director for Duke Children’s and Duke Cancer Institute.
  • Lead DCI Major Gift Officer meetings, retreats, and strategy sessions.

Portfolio Development and Management (30%)

  • Develop and maintain a portfolio of major and leadership gift prospects and the management of those prospects.
  • Identify prospects through various means, develop and cultivate prospect relationships, develop gift strategies for prospects with associated faculty and leaders, solicit prospects for major and leadership level gifts, negotiate and successfully close gifts.  Develop appropriate recognition and stewardship activities for donors.
  • Work with Duke Health and University colleagues to collaborate on prospects with multiple interests and serve as a liaison to University Development Major Gifts for Duke alumni prospects with DCI interests.
  • Analyze reports, write and edit materials in a variety of formats, among them proposals, briefings including talking points and contact reports.
  • Assign prospects to DCI Major Gift Officers.

Faculty Engagement (30%)

  • Work with the Executive Director, DCI and Division Chiefs to manage the participation in development efforts.  Foster collaboration and communication with faculty as it pertains to fundraising activity and goals.
  • Enhance, promote and coordinate development efforts for the building and strengthening of partnerships with the faculty of the departments.
  • Manage the communication of information to include briefings, development update agendas, and reporting to the Executive Director, DCI and Senior Executive Director, Duke Children’s and Duke Cancer Institute.
  • Provide information and reports to the Senior Executive Director, Duke Children’s and Duke Cancer Institute regarding the staffing of the Major Gift Program.

Manage Staff (10%)

  • Supervise two or three Major Gift Officers, including directing personnel actions such as hiring, performance appraisals, promotions, transfers, vacation schedules, mentoring, among other duties.
  • Develop staffing plans in support of program needs.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION/TRAINING

  • Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s or advanced degree preferred.

EXPERIENCE

  • Must have ten or more years of progressive responsibility in fundraising. Requires a proven track record of leading successful fundraising programs. Requires demonstrated skill as an effective communicator and writer. Academic medicine and campaign experience preferred.  

OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
 
SKILLS/REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a complex academic environment.
  • Ability to work effectively, and navigate progress with, C-Suite level leaders and/or academic department chairs.
  • Ability to cultivate and close major and leadership level gifts from individuals.
  • Experience working in a centralized/decentralized development organization.
  • Organizational skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills, both spoken and written.
  • Keen interest in academic medicine, research, science and technology preferred.
  • Effective computer skills and familiarity with databases.
  • Ability and desire to travel as needed.
  • Personnel management experience.
