Duties

The James N. Perry Scholar position serves the Program for Research on Religion and Urban Civil Society (PRRUCS) in the School of Arts and Sciences. 

In 2018, the Program for Research on Religion and Urban Civil Society (PRRUCS) and the University of Pennsylvania library obtained the papers of G.E.M./Elizabeth Anscombe (Anscombe Archives). The papers in the Anscombe Archives have only recently been made available for researchers affording the James N. Perry Scholar a unique opportunity to conduct research on one of the leading philosophers of the twentieth century. The James N. Perry Scholar will conduct original research and write 2-4 articles each year using the Anscombe Archives as their principal source documents. 

PRRUCS will co-sponsor events, workshops, and conferences related to research associated with the Anscombe Archives and related to the work of its Perry Family Scholars for Science, Spirituality, and Service. The James N. Perry Scholar will assist in the planning and execution of these events. 

The James N. Perry Scholar will teach and/or co-teach courses in two different programs in the College of Liberal and Professional Studies (LPS). The James N. Perry Scholar will teach or co-teach International Master of Public Administration (IMPA) 606, Critical Issues in Leadership during the Spring Semester each year. 

The James N. Perry Scholar will teach two courses each year in the LPS all on-line Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences (BAAS) program. The James N. Perry Scholar will teach LEAD 310 (Leadership & Public Administration) and/or LEAD 203 (Leadership & the Humanities). 

The James N. Perry Scholar will run the IMPA Public Law and Administration Speakers Series. The James N. Perry Scholar will select the topics, identify the speakers and handle all aspects of planning and delivering three events each semester. 

The James N. Perry Scholar direct reports to the Perry Executive Director of PRRUCS, and co-reports to the Fox Leadership International (FLI) Executive Director and LPS Vice Dean. This is a three year term appointment over three consecutive years.

Qualifications

A doctoral degree in Political Science is required and a specialty in Philosophy and/or public law and administration is required. Candidates must have a demonstrated interest and experience in teaching, researching, and writing about the works of G.E.M. Anscombe; a demonstrated interest and experience in successfully teaching political or moral philosophy and/or ethics; and demonstrated academic interest in U.S. public law and administration.
