About University of Macau

Founded in 1981, the University of Macau (UM) is an international public comprehensive university in Macao, with a multicultural campus and a system of whole-person education underpinned by faculties and residential colleges in an international education setup. 80 per cent of its faculty members are from outside Macao. With English as the main medium of instruction, the university is committed to producing creative and socially responsible graduates with a global mindset and international competitiveness.

Quality Education

Teaching units at UM include Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Faculty of Business Administration, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Health Sciences, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Science and Technology, Faculty of Social Sciences, Honours College, Graduate School, and Centre for Continuing Education. Research institutes include Institute of Advanced Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences, Institute of Applied Physics and Materials Engineering, Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences, Institute of Collaborative Innovation, Institute of Microelectronics, Asia-Pacific Academy of Economics and Management, and Centre for Macau Studies. 

Currently, there are more than 13,500 students at UM. For undergraduate education, the university adopts a ‘4-in-1’ collaborative education model, which consists of discipline-specific education, general education, research and internship education, and community and peer education. With a credit system and a collegiate system, the university offers over 100 degree programmes at bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels, covering a variety of fields, including literature, language, business administration, marketing, accounting, finance, international integrated resort management, science, education, biomedical science, law, history, economics, psychology, sociology, communication, engineering, computer science, and Chinese medical sciences.

International Reputation

UM is ranked No 193 in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, No 26 in the THE Young University Rankings, No 37 in the THE Asia University Rankings, and No 1 in the Association of Portuguese Speaking Universities. In the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings, it is ranked No 254. In the Essential Sciences Indicators (ESI) rankings, it is among the top 1 per cent in 12 subjects, namely Engineering, Computer Science, Materials Science, Chemistry, Pharmacology & Toxicology, Clinical Medicine, Psychiatry/Psychology, Biology & Biochemistry, Social Sciences, General, Agricultural Sciences, Economics & Business, and Environment/Ecology.

In the QS World University Rankings by Subject, UM’s rankings are as follows: 51-100 in Hospitality and Leisure Management, 151-200 in Linguistics, 251-300 in Education and Training, and English Language and Literature, 301-330 in Psychology, 301-340 in Sociology, 501-530 in Mathematics, and 501-550 in Medicine. 

In the THE World University Rankings by subject, UM’s rankings are as follows: 101-125 in Education, and Psychology; 126-150 in Law, and Engineering; 151-175 in Computer Sciences; 176-200 in Life Sciences; 201-250 in Arts & Humanities, Physical Sciences, and Social Sciences; 251-300 in Clinical & Health; and 301-400 in Business & Economics. 

Internationalisation

UM is an international university with a multicultural campus. It adopts a modern governance model and recruits faculty members internationally. 80 per cent of its faculty members are from outside Macao. The university’s international characteristics have attracted outstanding students from around the world, which in turn has created a vibrant, multicultural campus. UM constantly expands its international network and actively builds new platforms for international collaboration in order to broaden the students’ horizons. It has signed collaboration agreements with more than 300 higher education institutions spanning over 30 countries and regions and UM students can enjoy exchange opportunities offered by over 150 of these institutions. The university also provides students with many internship opportunities, both local and overseas, in order to enhance their employability upon graduation.

UM has recruited a team of high-calibre faculty members from around the world. Many of them have earned prestigious titles, such as member of Academia Europaea (Academy of Europe), fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, fellow of the Royal Society of Biology, fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts, member of the Portuguese Academy of Sciences, fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers, fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, fellow of the Society of Photographic Instrumentation Engineers, and Chang Jiang Scholar Chair Professor (Ministry of Education).

Not only does the university constantly search for high-calibre scholars, it also offers attractive work conditions through the UM Talent Programme to enable faculty members to achieve their full potential so that they can produce outstanding results. As part of the programme, the UM Macao Fellow scheme aims to nurture young local scholars and encourage talented professionals to develop their careers in Macao.

A Unique Residential College System

UM’s residential college (RC) system provides a platform for knowledge integration based on the university’s ‘4-in-1’ model of whole-person education. This is unique among universities in Macao. There are currently ten RCs at UM, namely Chao Kuang Piu College, Cheng Yu Tung College, Cheong Kun Lun College, Choi Kai Yau College, Henry Fok Pearl Jubilee College, Lui Che Woo College, Ma Man Kei and Lo Pak Sam College, Moon Chun Memorial College, Shiu Pong College, and Stanley Ho East Asia College. As a complement to the university’s faculty-based system, the RCs serve as a vehicle for whole-person education through systematic planning of experiential programmes, with the aim of nurturing students who are successful in their studies and whole-person development. The RCs strive to enhance students’ seven competencies: responsible citizenship, global competitiveness, knowledge integration, teamwork and collaboration, service and leadership, cultural engagement, and healthy lifestyle.
