About Us
Beijing Normal University (BNU) is a top-class university under the administration of the Ministry of Education and is renowned in higher education for teacher education, education science, as well as fundamental arts and the sciences. With a history of over a hundred years, BNU has created rich cultural heritage, outstanding academic achievements, and abundant educational resources. In 2017, BNU entered the national "world-class university" construction category A list, and 11 disciplines, including Environmental Science and Engineering, which entered the national "world-class discipline" construction list.
School of Environment at Beijing Normal University (BNU) is one of the oldest and most prestigious institutions for environmental research and education in China, dating from 1952. The school has four departments (Departments of Environmental Sciences, Environmental Planning and Management, Ecological Engineering in environment, and Environmental Systems Engineering) and seven institutes (Institutes of Environmental Sciences, Environmental Policy and Management, Watershed Management, Aquatic Ecology Engineering, Urban and Regional Ecology, Water Quality Control Engineering, and Cross-media Pollution Control).
In 2017, the environmental science and engineering discipline was selected into the first-class discipline construction list (double first-class) and was awarded A in the fourth round of national discipline evaluation. According to the ESI report 2020, the Environment/ Ecology program of BNU was respectively among 0.03% (32/1060) and 0.1% (106/1060) of the total 1060 research institutes (i.e., top 1% of worldwide research institutes) in terms of the total number of published papers, and the total number of citations.
BNU’s environmental science program was ranked in the top 51~100 in the QS World University Rankings and ranked in 95 in the US News Ranking. At present, School of Environment has nearly 80 full-time faculty, including 1 academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 academician of Canadian Academy of Engineering, 6 Cheung Kong Scholars ,5 Chief Scientists of 973 Projects, 7 Recipients of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. Pertaining to the international evaluation, thirteen faculty members have been ranked within top 1% by ESI.
With an aim to build the Environmental Science and Engineering discipline of BNU to World-class discipline, promoting the development of scientific research as well as in-depth talent training and internationalization; the Research and Development Center for Watershed Environmental Eco-Engineering at Beijing Normal University (Zhuhai Campus) was established in May 2019. As a new growth pole for the development of Environmental Science of BNU, this Center focuses on watershed/regional water environmental management and ecological control, particular interest in sewage disposal and resource recovery, soil pollution control and management, lake/river environment and ecology, coastal and offshore ecology, as well as the system simulation and planning management.
