Postdoctoral Researcher in distributed computing for sequencing data

Position description

A fixed-term postdoctoral researcher position until the end of year 2022 is available in the Genome-scale algorithmics research team of Professor Veli Mäkinen. The team is part of the Algorithmic Bioinformatics research group of the Department of Computer Science at the University of Helsinki. As a postdoctoral researcher you will work on developing distributed computing methods and tools for genomic variant detection exploiting founder sequence -based pangenomic references and modern high-throughput sequencing data. You are expected to publish your findings in international scientific journals and international scientific conferences. Your work may also include supervision of students and teaching duties (at most 5-10% of annual working time).

The starting date in the position is negotiable. An extension of the position to two years is also negotiable with the research group of Academy Professor Lauri Aaltonen, Centre of Excellence in Tumor Genetics Research, Faculty of Medicine.

Requirements

Candidates must hold a PhD degree in computer science or bioinformatics (or related fields) and have experience in algorithm engineering. Also, candidates who are expected to be granted the PhD degree at latest during Summer 2022 may be considered. Experience in processing of high-throughput sequencing data is an advantage. Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are needed. You should have a strong motivation for research in this field and possess the ability to carry out independent research.

Salary and benefits

The salary will be in accordance with the University salary system (for teaching and research personnel, level 5). In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance. The starting salary will be approximately 3500–3900 €/month.
