The SurgiCAL ProtEomics Laboratory (SCALPEL) is seeking an enthusiastic and highly motivated Research Assistant to support our molecular and cellular investigations in using patient-derived models to develop precision medicine approaches in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). A variety of cutting-edge techniques are used in the laboratory, while training and guidance will be provided, a desire to gain independence and good work ethics are essential. Requirements

  • Applicants should possess a BSc (Hons) or MSc in life sciences, biomedical sciences, biochemistry, bioengineering or equivalent from a well-recognized university.
  • 1-2 years of work experience is preferred but fresh graduates will also be considered.
  • Previous research experience in molecular/cellular biology, liquid chromatography techniques will be considered favourably.
  • Proficient in computer software, including Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Self-driven, independent, team player, meticulous and have a keen eye for details.
  • Willingness to learn new technologies and techniques (i.e. proteomics-based workflow), tackle both new and routine duties, good organisation, and management skills.
  • Able to work well in an interdisciplinary and collaborative environment.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing environment and project priorities / timelines.
  • Able to work at flexible hours occasionally when performing time-sensitive experiments.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong passion, and commitment to science.

Keys Responsibilities

  • To coordinate, collect, process, record, and store clinical specimens (e.g., plasma, biopsies).
  • To support current and future research projects in the laboratory including,
  • Expansion and maintenance of 2D and 3D patient-derived organoid cultures.
  • Molecular/cellular biology related techniques: Cell viability assay, drug screening, western blotting, genomic DNA/RNA isolation, gel-electrophoresis, and q-PCR/PCR.
  • To record experimental procedures systematically and accurately, present experimental results in a logical manner.
  • To provide frequent updates and plan further experiments under guidance.
  • To assist PI with updating and tracking of grants and other funding applications. To liaise with core facilities, committees, and the administrative office in research-related matters.
  • To maintain and keep track of procurement, delivery and payment of equipment, consumables, and reagents inventory required and maintain the general cleanliness in the laboratory.
  • To set-up, maintain core laboratory equipment and provide training for new users.
  • To assume as a safety lead and ensure that compliance of the laboratory adheres to requirements set by regulatory bodies(OSHE). Adapt to changes in these regulations and standards as they are announced.
  • To develop, maintain and review standard operating procedures and risk assessment for laboratory activities and processes.
