Job Details

As one of Europe’s leading research universities, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) in Munich is committed to the highest international standards of excellence in research and teaching. Building on its more than 500-year-long tradition, it offers a broad spectrum that covers all areas of knowledge within its 18 Faculties, ranging from the humanities, law, economics and social sciences, to medicine and the natural sciences.

The Faculty of Languages and Literatures invites applications for a

Junior Professorship (W1)
(3 years/tenure track leading to W2)

of Book Studies/Digital Book Culture

commencing as soon as possible.

The primary tasks of the successful candidate include research in the core areas of book studies in their historical and systematic dimensions, representing the subject in its entire breadth with a focus on the 20th/21st century, including digital book culture. The high interdisciplinary connectivity of book studies predestines the subject for intra- and inter-faculty research networks. One guarantee for the success of the Center for Book Studies at LMU is Munich’s role for the media and publishing sector. The interdisciplinary, international and practice-oriented networks must be expanded and maintained.

Prerequisites for this position are a university degree, teaching skills at university level and an aptitude for an academic career, usually evidenced by the excellent quality of a doctoral degree. If the applicant was employed as a research assistant either before or after obtaining the doctoral degree, the entire duration of the period of employment and of the doctoral degree should not exceed six years.

The position is a fixed-term professorship for the duration of three years. Pending a positive evaluation, the position may be extended by another period of three years. After a minimum of three years, pending a positive evaluation of the candidate’s aptitude for teaching and research as well as the candidate’s pedagogical and personal aptitude, the appointment may be converted to an indefinite W2-professorship (tenure). If the applicant was already a member of LMU Munich at the time of the appointment to a junior professorship, such a tenure option may only be exercised in exceptional cases.

This professorship is funded by the Tenure Track Programme of the German Federal Government and the Federal States.

Under the terms of the “LMU Academic Career Program”, in exceptional cases and subject to outstanding performance in research and teaching, the position may be converted from a W2 into a W3 Full Professorship at a later date.

LMU Munich makes a point of providing newly appointed professors with various types of support, such as welcoming services and assistance for dual career couples.

LMU Munich is an equal opportunity employer. The University continues to be very successful in increasing the number of female faculty members and strongly encourages applications from female candidates. LMU Munich intends to enhance the diversity of its faculty members. Furthermore, disabled candidates with essentially equal qualifications will be given preference.

Please submit your application comprising a curriculum vitae, documentation of academic degrees and certificates as well as a list of publications and teaching to the Dean of the Faculty of Languages and Literatures, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, Geschwister-Scholl-Platz 1, 80539 Munich, Germany, no later than January 27, 2022.
