Research Associate / PhD Student in Groundwater Modeling (m/f/x)

(subject to personal qualification employees are remunerated according to salary group E 13 TV-L)

starting March 1, 2022 with 75 % of the full-time weekly hours and the option of increase. The position is limited until February 28, 2025. The period of employment is governed by the Fixed Term Research Contracts Act (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz - WissZeitVG). The position aims at obtaining further academic qualification (e.g. PhD).

Background: Research on groundwater quality and the transport and storage of contaminants is crucial to secure the present and future drinking water supply. Distributed groundwater modeling and the analysis of (stable) isotopes are crucial for assessing water quality and quantifying contaminant transport. With this PhD position, we offer the possibility to unite the strengths of distributed modeling and isotope analysis. While isotopes observations have often been used to evaluate groundwater models, this research project will investigate the informative value of isotopes (stable water isotopes, tritium, and more) and transport proxies (e.g. water ages and transit times) for estimating spatial parameter fields of distributed groundwater models. The new understanding generated by this research will reveal which isotopic information and which proxies are most valuable for different hydrogeological settings and therefore improve the reliability of model-based predictions of groundwater availability and contamination risk.

Tasks: The PhD student will set up a transport enabled distributed groundwater model (preferably open source software) for selected aquifer systems, for which both hydraulic head and isotopic observations, in particular tritium, are available. The model will be linked with state-of-the-art algorithms for sensitivity analysis and uncertainty quantification to evaluate changes of hydraulic parameter identifiability and simulation uncertainty due to the incorporation of the isotopic data and transport proxies. The PhD student will closely collaborate with external advisors at the University of Bristol (sensitivity analysis) and the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (isotopic data). In addition to research, the PhD student will be actively contributing to teaching and student supervision at the Institute of Groundwater Mangement.

Requirements: university degree (MSc) in hydrosciences, hydro(geo)logy, civil engineering (or related) with a focus on model application and model evaluation; excellent skills in programming and parallelization to link the model code with the model evaluation algorithms and for analyzing the results; experiences in analysing and/or modeling tritium/tritium-helium derived groundwater ages; proficiency in spoken and written English to prepare scientific publications and to present to an international audience; experiences and independency in formularizing and testing research hypotheses; willingness to visit international research partners and laboratories for additional isotopic analysis is a further asset. Knowledge of German is desirable but not mandatory.
