About the Role

SHAPS was formed in 2011 and comprises the programs of History, History and Philosophy of Science, Philosophy, Classics and Archaeology, the Grimwade Centre for Cultural Materials Conservation, and the Program in Jewish Culture and Society. The School brings together a lively and engaging program of teaching and research that offers a wide variety of courses and subjects.

The Asia Institute is the University of Melbourne’s key centre for studies in Asian languages and cultures. Our teaching programs include Arabic, Chinese, Indonesian and Japanese languages, as well as Asian and Islamic Studies. The Asia Institute has close links with other Schools and faculties across the University, and our programs are strongly interdisciplinary in focus.

The School Manager is responsible for the leadership and management of the School’s day to day operations. They work closely with the Head of School to operationalise Faculty and School strategy.

Managing a small team of professional staff, the School Manager works under the broad direction of the Head of School and has professional accountability to the Faculty Executive Director.

In a typical week at work, you may:

  • Provide strategic and operational advice to the Head of School to enable the delivery of excellent, high impact teaching, research and engagement activity
  • Manage human and financial resources within the School, ensuring sound budget management
  • Actively participate in the development and implementation of the School’s strategic and operational plans with the Head of School and School leadership

About You

A true "leader", you will be adept at managing, supporting, and developing a team working across a variety of areas and at different levels. You will be no stranger to making difficult decisions, able to weigh up the likely outcomes and use your superior judgement to select select the way forward. This ability ties in well with your skills at planning, both in the short and long term. 

Ideally, you will further have:

  • Degree level qualification with extensive management experience in the tertiary sector or in another complex organisation
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively lead, motivate and supervise a team of staff, across varying functions and levels
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills with an ability to collaborate with a variety of stakeholders
  • Experience in the effective management of financial and budgetary operations within the tertiary sector, or a complex organisation
  • A demonstrated ability to implement new procedures and initiatives
