Job description
This is an exceptional development opportunity for a talented individual to advance research and education focussed on care of older adults and/or management of long-term conditions and/or palliative care. There is an opportunity to work alongside world leading researchers and educators in our Faculty, who are pioneering ways to improve care for older people with long term conditions.

The growing numbers of older people and increasing prevalence of chronic, often multimorbid illnesses in many countries mean that health and social care is changing. Our research and education programmes are increasingly focussed on ways to respond to the needs of future populations. This includes research on; delivering care closer to patients (supporting patients, others important to them, where they want to be cared for, harnessing telehealth, remote monitoring, technology supported self-management and other digital tools); inclusion, involving patients, and the public, as equal partners; tackling inequities, and reaching populations that have hitherto been missed; cost-effective treatments, therapies and services (innovating, and trialling interventions and their implementation, that give value to health and social care) and holistic, personalised care (considering mind and body together, putting the person before their diseases, developing and testing self-management interventions) in long term conditions and in palliative care.

The postholder will support education delivery in our Faculty, in particular the Department of Adult Nursing. They will deliver, develop, innovate and, where appropriate, manage high quality undergraduate and postgraduate education. They will actively support undergraduate and postgraduate adult nursing programmes, and other programmes in the Faculty, and aid the integration of research findings from across the Faculty, especially related to palliative care, older adult and long-term conditions, into the pre-nursing registration curriculum.

Owing to the agility of our Faculty and King’s we are able to consider applicants who are interested in being in our Division of Care for Long-Term Conditions, or in the Cicely Saunders Institute for Palliative Care, Policy and Rehabilitation, depending on best match of research proficiency. The Cicely Saunders Institute is the world’s only purpose-built Institute bringing research, education and clinical teams together in palliative care. It researches ways to improve care and its cost-effectiveness for the growing numbers of people with progressive diseases and in multimorbidity across four main areas: evaluating and improving care, symptom research, outcomes measurement, and living and dying in society. The Division of Care for Long Term Conditions unites teams researching ways to improve care in mental health, diabetes, bowel conditions and care for older people. The lecturer will work with successful and growing programmes of research. For example, an ESRC funded programme EMBED-Care – ‘Empowering Better End of Life Dementia Care’ led by Professor Evans in the Cicely Saunders Institute (with UCL); or NIHR programme on managing fatigue, pain and incontinence in Inflammatory Bowel Disease, led by Professor Norton in Care for Long Term Conditions. We welcome applicants with clinical links or responsibilities who wish to retain these skills and networks.

Our vision is to develop a blueprint for the integration of research and education to transform clinical care and build research capability; this lectureship is a core part of this ambition. Key is leadership, collaboration and team working. We unite academics and educators from Department of Adult Nursing, the Cicely Saunders Institute and the Division of Care for Long-Term Conditions, and across Faculties through Ageing Research at King’s. Our ambition aligns with King’s Strategic Vision 2029 for research to inform & innovate, and education to transform care.
