About - Melbourne Medical School

The Melbourne Medical School (MMS) was established in 1862 and has a substantial international reputation for its leadership in teaching and training, health research, policy and practice. The MMS is committed to working with the communities we serve to improve health and advance health care. We will do this through our teaching, learning, research, clinical care and advocacy.

The MMS is composed of eight clinical departments (General Practice, Medical Education, Medicine and Radiology, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Psychiatry, Rural Health and Surgery) which are embedded within clinical health services throughout metropolitan Melbourne and rural Victoria.

About the Role

The position of Academic Coordinator for the Northern Clinical School is affiliated with the Department of Medical Education, Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences at the University of Melbourne. The position is located at the Northern Centre for Health Education and Research (NCHER) located at the Northern Hospital in Epping and reports to the Deputy Director of Medical Student Education.

In a typical week at work, you may:

  • organise and implement the delivery of the medical curriculum within the Northern Clinical School
  • support the evaluation of curriculum delivery at Northern Clinical School and deliver clinical teaching
  • assist students from the Northern Clinical School regarding academic performance and referral to appropriate to student support services
  • build and maintain effective relationships with Northern Health and other stakeholders.

About You

Highly developed interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to work as part of a team will enable you to foster strong working relationships with health professionals, medical staff, at all hospitals affiliated with the NCS and the community.

Ideally, you will further have:

  • a medical qualification recognisable in Australia and Fellowship in an Australian College (e.g., FRACP, FRACGP, FACCRM, etc.).
  • a commitment to furthering the role of the University within Northern Health and fostering partnership opportunities with educational institutions and community bodies.
  • experience in clinical teaching, medical education, and curriculum delivery, preferably in the clinical field.
  • an understanding of the needs of medical students as well as an ability and willingness to counsel students as required.
  • enthusiasm for integrating innovative teaching methods into medical education.

Special Requirements

The Academic Coordinator must be accredited/approved by Northern Health to engage with staff, patients and students at the hospital to fulfil the responsibilities of the position.

To ensure the University continues to provide a safe environment for everyone, this position requires the incumbent to hold a current and valid Working with Children Check.
