Research Fellow, Foreign Policy and Defence Program
Reports to: Director, Foreign Policy and Defence
Full-time fixed-term position (with potential for extension)
Competitive salary commensurate with experience
Primary Position Activity: Undertake original research, conduct policy outreach and engagement, and manage think tank activities within the Foreign Policy and Defence Program.

The United States Studies Centre is recruiting an experienced Research Fellow/s to contribute to the work of the Foreign Policy and Defence Program. The successful candidate will play a key role in all aspects of the Program, undertaking original research, conducting policy outreach and delivering key think tank activities.
As a core member of our expanding Foreign Policy and Defence team, the Research Fellow will be immersed in the research work, policy engagement and major activities of one of Australia’s leading think tanks. They will have expertise in, and will work across, some of the following priority research areas:
- Strategic, defence and foreign policy trends in the Indo-Pacific
- Regional alliances, partnerships and alignment dynamics
- Deterrence and counter-coercion in US and Australian policy
- Defence strategy and budgets, industry and emerging technology
- America’s regional position and US/Australian strategic policy
This position offers a unique opportunity for a mid-career researcher and/or policy professional to apply and advance their substantive expertise, policy acumen, analytical skills and project management abilities as part of a dynamic team; and contribute to Australia’s policy debate on regional strategic, defence and foreign policy issues. It offers room for professional growth and advancement in the think tank and government sectors; and highly transferrable skills for careers in public service, academia, corporate/risk analysis and policy research.
Applicants should have background, experience and/or demonstrated interest in strategic studies, Indo-Pacific security and/or foreign and defence policy issues, including on the role of Australia and the United States in the Indo-Pacific region. Specific expertise in one or more of the priority areas outlined above is highly desirable. They should possess a relevant advanced degree and 4-5 years of applicable work/research experience in a think tank, government, policy or academic setting. Preference will be given to dynamic applicants who can independently manage research and administrative tasks; have proven strong research, writing, analytical and communication skills; and have prior experience in research, think tanks, government or other related roles.
