About the Faculty of Arts - School of Languages and Linguistics

Located in the Faculty of Arts, the School of Languages and Linguistics was formed in 1993 and hosts the following teaching and research programs: French, German, Italian, Russian, Spanish and European Studies, as well as Linguistics, Applied Linguistics and English as a Second Language. The School brings together a lively and engaging program of teaching and research that offers a wide variety of courses and subjects.

About the Role

The School of Languages and Linguistics teaches a broad suite of undergraduate and graduate courses, maintains a vigorous research higher degree culture, and has an internationally recognised research profile. The School houses the Research Unit for Indigenous Language, Language Testing Research Centre and a node of the ARC Centre of Excellence for the Dynamics of Language. The School now seeks to appoint a Lecturer to the teaching program in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, for a fixed term of one year.

The position is in Linguistics, which offers an undergraduate major and minor in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, the Master of Applied Linguistics, an Honours program and a large PhD program. The School also offers an English as a Second Language (ESL) program which includes a suite of credit-bearing subjects at undergraduate and graduate level.

About You

You will bring to the role:

  • A completed PhD in a relevant discipline
  • Demonstrated specialisation in sociolinguistics, applied linguistics, discourse studies, or closely related disciplines including demonstrated ability or experience in teaching the named subjects
  • Demonstrated ability for excellence in teaching including the capacity to initiate course/subject development
  • Demonstrated subject coordination experience
  • Ability to supervise honours and postgraduate coursework degree theses
  • A strong record in research with a developing publication profile
  • Demonstrated professional and collegial behaviour of a very high standard (encompassing commitment to the Faculty’s Values and Behaviours)
