The University of Canberra is a dynamic university with great ambition. The University partners with government, business and industry locally and internationally to challenge the status quo through the pursuit of best practice in teaching, learning and research. UC’s place-based identity ensures that it exists to serve Australia’s capital community and its surrounding region with a strong impact on the nation. The university’s continued success has resulted in UC being recognised as number one in the world for our activities aimed at reducing inequalities in the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings (2021), and as Australia’s fastest rising university and one of the fastest rising in the world in the most recent QS Rankings, 2021.

The Centre for Conservation Ecology and Genomics (CCEG), part of the Institute for Applied Ecology, seeks to appoint two researchers to positions that apply genomic approaches to addressing ecological and conservation questions.

1. Research Fellow in Conservation Genomics

We seek an emerging research leader in applying genomic approaches to solve pressing problems in conservation and/or biosecurity.

The appointee will be expected to establish a dynamic research program within CCEG that enhances our existing research capability, which includes enhancing conservation and biosecurity using environmental DNA, integrating ecology and genomics to improve conservation management, uncovering how species cope with rapid change and new tools for processing and analysing genomic data.

We are especially looking for someone with strong bioinformatic/analytical skills willing to collaborate with other Centre researchers, and other researchers in the Institute for Applied Ecology and wider Faculty, to develop an exciting and innovative research program that will extend our capacity to use genomic data to address applied conservation and/or biosecurity problems.

This is a great opportunity for a highly motivated individual to build a research program in collaboration with other researchers and to contribute to a collegial and supportive team environment.

The successful applicant will have a PhD or equivalent degree in biological sciences or an aligned discipline, demonstrated research excellence in genomics, evidenced by a track record of high-quality research outputs, including publications in highly regarded peer-reviewed scientific journals.

2. Postdoctoral Fellow in Population Genomics

The Centre for Conservation Ecology and Genomics at the University of Canberra in collaboration with the University of Sydney, Harvard University, and the Florida International University has an exciting opportunity to recruit a Postdoctoral Fellow to study the population genomics of desert mammals and reptiles in Australia. The project is funded through the Australian Research Council and aims to understand how climatic fluctuations that drive periodic population pulses act to structure genetic variation and drive rapid evolutionary change.

The Postdoctoral Fellow in Population Genomics will be joining the project at critical stage as it moves towards completion and will play a key role in analysing the data and producing publications.

The successful applicant will have a PhD in population genomics, bioinformatics or a similar field along with demonstrated experience in analysing high-resolution genomic data, a publication portfolio, strong modelling skills and fluency with R software.

To be considered for either position, your application must include your CV and a covering letter outlining your suitability for the position.

The University offers excellent conditions and benefits such as flexible, family-friendly policies, on site gym, on site medical services, a supermarket and childcare facilities.

UC’s Strategic Plan 2018-2022 sets a goal to be the national sector leader in equity, diversity, inclusion and access, and the ambitious goals of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Strategic Plan are designed to ensure that our Indigenous students and staff flourish in a welcoming and culturally safe environment. UC encourages applications from women, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, people with disabilities and people from culturally diverse groups.
