Salary Range:
$88,384 - $97,837 p.a.

Reporting to:
Manager, Research Grants and Tenders

Under broad direction, the Senior Research Grants Officer coordinates grant applications for funding opportunities on behalf of the University, and acts as the key contact in the support of academic researchers applying for research funding. As part of the RDS team the Senior Research Grants Officer will be required to work closely with a number of stakeholders including legal support staff, researchers, College based support staff, grants finance and external funding bodies. In particular, the position leads the coordination of the major grant application development and submission processes within the University.

Key Position Responsibilities

The Senior Research Grants Officer is accountable for:

  • Representing the University and its research capability at a range of internal and external engagements to promote and build the reputation of the University and assist in the generation and identification of new opportunities.
  • Participating in strategic planning sessions and assisting the strategic research direction for the University.
  • Investigating funding opportunities and providing representation in meetings to develop partnerships and improving collaborations.
  • Contributing to and coordinating the production of project reports and annual reports to meet University and contractual obligations.

 Providing research support to staff by:

  • Identifying research opportunities and facilitating the involvement of College staff in grants, proposals and new opportunities;
  • Linking staff with external visitors to provide opportunities for collaborative research; and
  • Facilitating the preparation of project funding proposals.

Coordinating the research administration and community engagement functions including:

  • Managing the decision making and allocation processes for research funding applications using the University’s finance system;
  • Monitoring quality assurance of research data;
  • Providing advice regarding policies and procedures;
  • Providing assistance to academic staff with the preparation of research grant applications;
  • Reviewing and updating relevant publications, where necessary.
  • Providing executive support to research related committees including the preparation of agenda, minutes, correspondence reports and taking follow-up action.

Providing high-level administration support and advice to ensure the Colleges meet the requirements of the Federal Government’s Excellence in Research for Australia initiative by:

  • Coordinating and facilitating preparation including representation on committees and working parties; and
  • Developing and overseeing data management.
  • Assisting with annual grants submission rounds with verification of publications and grant data collections.
  • Developing and implementing promotional material and communications to promote research both internal and external.
  • Assisting the Director and RDS with day-to-day supervision and development of staff.
  • Process category 1 NHMRC and MRFF applications utilising systems including Research Now SAPPHIRE and the University's contract management system.
  • Any other responsibilities in line with the level of the position as assigned by the Supervisor and/or the University.

Key Position Capabilities

  • A relevant degree and experience or an equivalent combination of experience and/or education and/or training.
  • A high level of competence in project management and administrative duties including the administration of major grant funding submission rounds.
  • Demonstrated capability in team leadership and the ability to build a high performing and customer focused team in a complex environment.
  • Highly developed demonstrated capacity to accurately interpret and ensure compliance with complex rules, policies and procedures, and display both an attention to detail and the ability to respond to broad strategies and requirements.
  • Demonstrated high level liaison and negotiation skills, excellent oral and written communication skills, including demonstrated capacity to provide high quality advice to clients as well as research granting agencies.
  • Demonstrated capacity to develop training materials and programs of relevance to researchers as part of a range of grant support services.
  • Practical experience in the application of intellectual property, insurance and risk principles.
  • Demonstrated expertise in working with databases and information management systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to recognize and recommend areas for improvement to work processes.
  • An in-depth understanding of the University research environment, including the funding of research and policy context in which research administration operates.
  • Knowledge of and an ability to learn how to process category 1 NHMRC and MRFF grant applications.
