SENIOR LECTURER/ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR/PROFESSOR (ONE POST)

This is a present position, which will become vacant as from 1 May 2022. The successful candidate must be able to start on 1 May 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The responsibilities of the incumbent will include:

  • Teaching and curriculum development in the subject specialisations of human rights law, with a focus on sexual and reproductive health and rights in an African context, at the postgraduate level;
  • Conducting academic and scholarly research in pursuit of the Faculty’s research objectives;
  • Supervising students at the postgraduate level;
  • Assisting with academic administration and management when required;
  • Providing mentorship to post-doctoral fellows;
  • Developing and overseeing the implementation of donor-funded projects in human rights law, with a focus on sexual and reproductive health and rights;
  • Performing other duties as may be required by the Director/Head of Department.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Senior Lecturer

  • A doctorate with specialisation in human rights law, preferably with a focus on sexual and reproductive health and rights in an African context;
  • At least 5 years’ tertiary teaching experience, which includes curriculum development and transformation as strong recommendations;
  • A significant record of quality peer-reviewed publications, exemplified by at least 8 peer-reviewed or DHET accredited publication units, of which 3 should have been published in the past 3 years;
  • Evidence of successful supervision of at least 2 research master’s degree or 4 coursework mini-dissertations;
  • Conference papers delivered at national or international conferences will be a recommendation;
  • Relevant academic administration experience;
  • Evidence of international presence in the field of human rights law, preferably with a focus on sexual and reproductive health;
  • Evidence of community engagement related to human rights. 

Associate Professor

  • A doctorate with specialisation in human rights law, preferably with a focus on sexual and reproductive health and rights in an African context;
  • At least 8 years’ tertiary teaching experience, which includes curriculum development and transformation as strong recommendations;
  • A significant record of quality peer-reviewed publications, exemplified by at least 16 peer-reviewed or DHET accredited publication units, of which 6 should have been published in the past 4 years;
  • An excellent record of successful postgraduate supervision at Master’s and Doctoral level, exemplified by ssuccessful postgraduate student supervision of at least 4 research master’s or 6 coursework master’s mini-dissertations, and one doctoral student;
  • Conference papers delivered at national or international conferences;
  • Suitable NRF research rating, or a substantive peer-review report or other proof of academic standing indicating local recognition and some international recognition in the field of expertise;
  • Relevant academic administration experience;
  • Evidence of international presence in the field of human rights law, preferably with a focus on sexual and reproductive health;
  • Evidence of community engagement related to human rights;
  • Active memberships of academic relevant local and international subject-related bodies, where applicable.

Professor

  • A doctorate with specialisation in human rights law, preferably with a focus on sexual and reproductive health and rights in an African context;
  •  At least 10 years’ tertiary teaching experience, which includes curriculum development and transformation as strong recommendations;
  • An outstanding record of quality peer reviewed publications, exemplified by at least 30 peer-reviewed or DHET accredited publication units, of which 8 should have been published in the past 5 years;
  • An excellent record of successful postgraduate supervision at Master’s and Doctoral level, exemplified by successful supervision of at least 6 research masters or 10 coursework master’s mini-dissertations, and 2 doctoral theses;
  • Active memberships of academic relevant local and international subject-related bodies, where applicable;
  • Conference papers delivered at international conferences;
  • Suitable NRF research rating or a substantive peer-review report or other proof of academic standing indicating international recognition in the field of expertise;
  • Relevant academic administration experience;
  • Evidence of international presence in the field of human rights law, preferably with a focus on sexual and reproductive health; and
  • Evidence of community engagement related to human rights.
  • A published monograph will be a strong recommendation.

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

  • Ability to work independently;
  • Ability to work as part of a diverse and dynamic team;
  • Appropriate communication skills;
  • An in-depth understanding of human rights law, with a focus on sexual and reproductive health and rights, to enable development of new knowledge, innovation and understanding within the field.

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES

Senior Lecturer

  • Suitable NRF research rating, or a substantive peer-review report or other proof of academic standing indicating local recognition and some international recognition in the field of expertise;
  • Evidence of successful postgraduate supervision at doctoral level,
  • Active memberships of relevant local and international subject-related bodies, where applicable;
  • Specialisation in the rights of persons with disabilities, and of sexual and gender minorities;
  • Ability or experience in adopting multi- and inter-disciplinary approaches;
  • Established networks and teaching experience across Africa;
  • Experience in project management.

Associate Professor

  • Specialisation in the rights of persons with disabilities, and of sexual and gender minorities;
  • Ability or experience in adopting multi- and inter-disciplinary approaches;
  • Established networks and teaching experience across Africa;
  • Experience in project management.

Professor

  • Experience in project management.
  • Established networks and teaching experience across Africa;
  • Ability or experience in adopting multi- and inter-disciplinary approaches;
  • Specialisation in the rights of persons with disabilities, and of sexual and gender minorities;

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
