Salary Range:
$121,795 - $140102 pa

Education Lead, Rural and Remote Health

Location:
The role will be based at either the Murray Bridge, Renmark or Victor Harbor Campus and will be required to travel between campuses.

This Teaching Specialist (Clinical/Practitioner) position, with its primary focus on teaching and teaching-related activities drawing on contemporary/professional practice, has an important role to play in the University’s achievement of its strategic plan, Making a Difference: The 2025 Agenda.

The Clinical Educator (Rural Medicine) will coordinate and provide rural clinical education and support rural GP and hospital supervisors in the Hills, Mallee, Fleurieu region. The role will be required to work collaboratively with academics, clinicians and professional staff to coordinate and facilitate the training programs and assessment requirements primarily for Doctor of Medicine (MD) students placed in MD Rural Stream (MDRS).

The Clinical Educator will be required to liaise with and/or report to various committees, including the Clinical Educators Meeting and regional Faculty Meetings.

Key Position Responsibilities

This role is predominantly concerned with providing leadership and direction related to teaching and teaching-related duties involving the creation, delivery and content of university-level education. It includes (but is not limited to): direct teaching informed by approaches that enhance the student experience; educational leadership; curriculum design and review; delivery innovation; advancements in education technologies; and contribution to ensuring internal and external compliance and accreditation of courses. The position does not include making a research contribution.

It is expected that recent, ongoing (concurrent) or extensive experience and knowledge of contemporary clinical/professional practice will be brought to the role.

The Clinical Educator will be responsible for:

Teaching:

  • Inspiring teaching informed by approaches that enhance the student experience.
  • Teaching students in a variety of settings about rural and remote health with particular reference to the incumbent’s discipline and clinical expertise, using a variety of pedagogies;
  • Contributing to the selection of rural students as required;
  • Contributing to the teaching of students undertaking rural placements in the other years of the MD as appropriate;
  • Simulation learning, teaching, being a role model and mentor, assessment with individual and group feedback;
  • Coordinating support for clinical supervisors and assessors and mentoring students;
  • Participating in a process of quality improvement for the MD program in Rural and Remote Health SA;
  • Build inter-professional learning and contemporary practice issues into the MD program in Rural and Remote Health SA;
  • Providing leadership in the development of a local program and input into the MD curriculum in Rural and Remote Health SA;
  • Representing Rural and Remote Health SA on committees relevant to rural health issues as required and participate in the wider academic activities of Rural and Remote Health SA as required.

University, Professional and Service:

  • Contributing to the academic coordination and administration of the clinical program;
  • Maintaining a strong familiarity with the advancement of knowledge in the relevant discipline;
  • Maintaining partnerships with clinicians including GPs and specialists who supervise medical students in the region;
  • Undertaking administrative activities as determined by the supervisor;
  • Maintaining a clinical workload;
  • Undertaking professional / community engagement activities in Rural and Remote Health SA;
  • Any other responsibilities in line with the level of the position as assigned by the Supervisor and/or the University.

Key Position Capabilities

  • A doctorate in a relevant discipline or equivalent clinical/professional experience and standing. (e.g. Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) or Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM).
  • Current registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra).
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, develop and coordinate teaching programs effectively and in a manner that influences, motivates and inspires students to learn.
  • Significant and sustained evidence of development, delivery and evaluation of innovative teaching and learning strategies both in the classroom and in clinical education.
  • Demonstrated experience in medical education and assessment or equivalent experience in rural practice teaching.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the political, workforce, educational and research issues surrounding rural practice and the issues affecting the training and retention of rural general practitioners.
  • High level of communication, interpersonal, negotiation and collaboration skills.
  • Proficiency in using internet communications and information systems. 
  • Evidence of upholding the values and ethos of the University.
  • An interest in rural and remote education and health service delivery.
  • Identifies as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person (desirable)
