University Secretary & Director of Academic Quality

University of Salford

Competitive salary

Since our beginnings as the Salford Royal Technical Institute in 1896, we have been industry focused and daring, developing the skills of working people for nearly 125 years. We are an ambitious University, with our 20,000 students contributing enormously to the local economy and where our teaching, research and innovation is renowned throughout the world.

With changes to quality assurance and regulation the higher education sector is in a period of unprecedented change. To address these challenges, we have reconsidered our internal approaches to Quality Assurance and established a refocused Quality Management Office (QMO) and created a new position of University Secretary and Director of Academic Quality. This role combines two key areas of the University’s governance and attends the Vice Chancellor’s Executive Team. The role is the senior governance and legal officer in the University and is responsible to the Chair of Council in fulfilling the role as Secretary, providing an independent link between governance and executive functions.

Setting up and establishing the operating practices of QMO will represent a new chapter for quality assurance for the University. We have excellent processes and approaches to securing quality and standards but we recognise that we need to do more to ensure that these approaches are fully embraced and help us drive consistent positive impact on student experience and outcomes. Success in the role will see focused, consistent and joined up management of performance across the taught academic portfolio, and proactive leadership which addresses under-performance in a timely manner.

Key will be establishing good working relationships with the academic schools. Candidates will bring excellent leadership, interpersonal, networking and communication skills, the ability to engage academic and professional services staff at every level of the University, and the ability to build and maintain complex relationships with various stakeholders with differing requirements.

The closing date for applications is noon on Monday 8 November 2021.

We are committed to an inclusive approach to promoting equality, diversity and inclusion. We aim to have a more diverse workforce at all levels of the institution and particularly welcome applications from people from minority ethnic backgrounds and people with disabilities, who are under-represented in our workforce.
