Long Description

INVITATION TO APPLY FOR RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP IN THE DEPARTMENT OF GEOGRAPHY

Riverine Sediment Load Responses to Climate Change in High Mountain Asia (HMA)

We intend to hire two full time Research Fellows (one for three years and another for two years) for a MOE (Ministry of Education, Singapore) funded project.

This project aims to address a fundamental research gap in understanding of how climate change (e.g. increase in temperature and precipitation) affects the sediment load in the headwater rivers of HMA (namely in Himalayas,
Tibet Plateau and Tianshan regions). Increase in temperature changes slope and fluvial processes through altering the processes of glacier-snow-permafrost melting.

The duties of the RF include:

  • The Research Fellows will closely work with the project PI Professor Lu Xi Xi. The Research Fellows will conduct in-situ identifications of sediment sources and quantification of sediment fluxes
  • in selected headwater regions of the large Asian rivers.  Special attention will be paid to runoff and sediment load attribution analysis in the cold environments with glacier-snow-permafrost.
  • The relative impacts of temperature, precipitation, glaciers, and snow on sediment load will be examined by “multiple double-mass-curves” (Lu et al. 2013 in Internal Journal of Sediment Research)
  • and coupled hydro-geomorphological models.

Interested candidates should submit an application: a letter of interest with details of their research experience, interest and future plan (1-2 pages), a full curriculum vitae, contact information for three references
and the PDF of your best paper (optional). For full consideration, please submit your application by 10 May 2021.

NUS is one of the top universities in Asia, and its geography department has recently been ranked 5th in the world. This position offers an excellent environment for working with a highly skilled interdisciplinary team and will provide chances to collaborate with researchers at both national and international institutes.

If interested, please contact Professor Lu Xi Xi, geoluxx@nus.edu.sg , for further details.

Qualifications

The candidates must have a PhD degree in the relevant fields like geomorphology, hydrology and earth sciences. In particular the candidates with hydrological and sedimentological modeling skills in the high-altitude cold environments are encouraged to apply.

We provide competitive salary for the positions with consideration of research background and previous working experiences.
