Dean of School of Computing

The Position:

Reporting to the Vice President Academic Affairs & Research; the Dean will be responsible for leading all the activities of the NCI School of Computing and will provide strategic direction, academic leadership, and strong management to the school in conjunction with the Vice Deans.

The role holder will manage the school’s staff and will have overall accountability for the operations of the school. The Dean will develop and support income generation in the school and will ensure that the resources of the school are oriented to the achievement of the goals of NCI. The Dean is also a key member of the NCI senior leadership, Executive Group, which has responsibility for the achievement of the college’s goals and objectives as well as policy and operational matters related to college activities.

The Dean of School of Computing is academically ranked at professorial level and will be responsible for leading academic staff in excellence in teaching and research both nationally and internationally.

Specific responsibilities:

• Lead academic faculty in the delivery of the school’s high-quality curriculum and drive innovation in new programmes and educational approaches.

• Foster and support excellence and integrity in teaching, research, and service to students through developing the resources and talent within the school.

• Develop research and scholarship opportunities within the school and provide leadership for knowledge transfer with industry and other partners.

• Management and oversight of international collaborations.

• Work collaboratively with other schools and departments and ensure that the school’s links with the wider college are supported and developed.

• Ensure that the performance of faculty and administrative staff within the school is appropriately managed and reviewed in line with college policies.

• Responsible for the quality of school provision including the implementation of quality accreditation related to learning, teaching and assessment, course approval and external examiners involvement.

• Ensure that the academic performance of the school is appropriately monitored and that related action plans are implemented.

• Develop and support income generating activity in the school and prepare and manage the school’s budget in line with college requirements.

• Understand key accreditation bodies associated with a progressive School of Computing, to work with the NCI Vice President in seeking to obtain targeted accreditations.

• Maintain and develop positive relationships with those professional bodies involved in accrediting the school’s provision.

• Develop and maintain external links and partnerships that support the objectives of the school and the college’s strategic plan.

• Attend and contribute to Academic Council and Executive Group meetings.

• Contribute to the development of college strategy.

Essential academic qualifications and professional experience:

Applicants for this position must, as a minimum, have a PhD in a related area and five years’ proven experience of academic leadership and management appropriate to a higher education environment.

• Ability to successfully lead, motivate and manage multi-skilled staff groups and to build effective teams and cross institutional collaborations.

• Excellent interpersonal skills and experience of communicating effectively with a wide variety of stakeholders, including the technology sector.

• Leadership experience in guiding innovation in learning and teaching, academic research, and curriculum development in a competitive landscape.

• A forward-looking leader with a proven record in income generation, research, quality provision and programme portfolio development that will allow the school to maintain and enhance its position in the third-level sector in Ireland and globally.

• Good standing within their own academic field including evidence of publications.

• An innovative, commercially aware and astute individual who can show an ability to contribute to the development and implementation of strategy.

• A willingness to travel.

Terms and Conditions of position:

Contract Type: Permanent Salary Band: €93,182 - €124,242

Annual Leave: 34 days

Pension: Defined Contribution Pension Scheme
