The Francis Crick Institute

Appointment of Director of Communications & Public Engagement

The Francis Crick Institute is an internationally renowned biomedical research institute conducting world-class discovery research to understand life and drive benefits for human health; we are home to some of the most talented and ambitious scientists in the world who pursue imaginative and bold ideas. Our mission is discovery without boundaries. We want to understand more about how living things work to improve treatment, diagnosis and prevention of human disease, and generate economic opportunities for the UK. We are a unique partnership between six of the world’s leading biomedical research organisations – the Medical Research Council, Cancer Research UK, the Wellcome Trust, University College London, Imperial College London and King’s College London. Located in a state-of-the-art building in central London, the Crick houses over 2000 staff and more than 100 research groups.

Ensuring that the Crick’s story is well understood and demonstrating the impact of research is critical to enhancing our reputation. We are seeking a highly motivated Director of Communications and Public Engagement who will help us continue to make a difference to the world and can support our community to make that happen. Working closely with our Director/CEO, Professor Sir Paul Nurse, and advising senior leaders, the new Director of Communications & Public Engagement will lead and develop a strong team, focused on holistic and integrated communications to both external and internal audiences. They will lead communications activities across all media platforms; develop the brand; improve internal communications; enhance relationships with government and influential stakeholders; oversee events, exhibitions, education outreach and community engagement; and progress a digital strategy. The Director of Communications and Public Engagement will enhance existing strengths whilst continuing to build and shape the team to meet evolving needs. The role requires strategic thinking, agility, and the ability to proactively develop and implement communications strategies as well as harnessing and reacting to the news agenda.

Candidates will be strongly motivated by our mission and vision and will bring a successful track record of leading strategic development, implementation, and management of internal and external communications in a comparably complex context. A passion for science is essential.

The Crick is committed to equality, diversity and inclusion. We welcome and strongly encourage individuals of all backgrounds to apply for this role.
