Job description

The School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences is currently seeking to appoint an exceptional candidate to the post of Bioinformatician in the Patrick G Johnston Centre for Cancer Research. 

The successful candidate will work alongside the Precision Medicine Centre of Excellence's (PMC) Clinical and Scientific Leads to develop, validate and maintain analytical tools, data analysis pipelines and algorithms to analyse genomic information from cancer specimens, in the context of clinical studies and clinical trials. The PMC provides an integrated cancer diagnostic service, encompassing high throughput genomics, digital pathology and big data analytics in a fully integrated fashion.

The successful candidate must have:

  • Have or be about to obtain a PhD in computational biology, bioinformatics, biostatistics, mathematics or related discipline.
  • At least three years relevant research experience in genomics/molecular pathology.
  • Experience of working with Linux/UNIX environments.
  • Significant experience managing and analysing NGS data and other big data.
  • Proficiency with perl, python, bash and/or equivalent languages.
  • Experience of using standard bioinformatics pipeline framework e.g. SnakeMake, NextFlow
  • Experience of using version control system such as Git.
  • Experience with suitable analysis and plotting languages, particularly R or Matlab.
  • Publication record in a relevant field commensurate to experience.
  • Sufficient breadth and depth of specialist knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques to work within established research programmes.
  • Ability to work with clinical specimens and in a clinical environment, conforming to regulatory requirements.

Fixed term contract posts are available for the stated period in the first instance but in particular circumstances may be renewed or made permanent subject to availability of funding.
