Job Details

Northumbria University Newcastle is a research-rich, business-focussed, professional university with a global reputation for academic excellence. Located in Newcastle upon Tyne, and with a campus in the heart of London’s financial district, Northumbria University is located in the UK’s best two cities for students. At Northumbria we are global in our scope and reach, with operations in London, Amsterdam, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Singapore, and we remain the largest English provider in Hong Kong. The University continues its strong commitment to internationalism, including its valuable and long-standing links with Europe.

Working within the Department of Geography and Environmental Sciences and the research theme Extreme Environments, you will conduct research related to the dynamics of the Antarctic Ice Sheet and its interactions with the surrounding ocean. This project is a part of the EU funded project TiPPACCs on Tipping Points in the Antarctic Climate Components.  You will be working as a part of a large international team including researchers at Northumbria University, Newcastle, and several other European research groups (https://cordis.europa.eu/project/id/820575).

The work involves running ice-flow and simplified ocean circulations models (plume and box models) and contributing to the further development and testing of the model configuration. There is considerable scope for exploring new research directions and testing and trying new methodologies to understand that stability regime of the coupled ice+ocean system.

You must hold a PhD degree in earth sciences, physical geography, physics, mathematics, or related fields. Previous experience in ice-flow modelling and/or the use of ocean circulations models is of advantage, but not an essential requirement.
