Job description

We are seeking an accomplished post-doctoral researcher with an interest in global mental health to join the NIHR Global Health Research Group on Violence Against Women and Mental Health at the Section of Women’s Mental Health, King’s College London.  The Group is a collaboration between UCL, King’s College London, the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, St. George’s, University or Nottingham, as well as academic and non-academic partners in India, Sri Lanka, and Afghanistan.  It aims to develop a comprehensive, adaptable package of care to improve the mental health of survivors of violence against women, modern slavery, and civil conflict in resource constrained settings in India, Sri Lanka, and Afghanistan.  Primary responsibilities are to undertake realist reviews relating to violence and mental health, qualitative research, and support public engagement activities.

The role is full time, but we are open to a job share and flexible working arrangements, such as compressed hours.   

 

This post will be offered on an a fixed-term contract until 31 March 2022.  

 

This is a full-time post - 100% full time equivalent, however applications are also welcome from candidates wishing to work part-time. Please specify in your application if you wish to work part time and the number of preferred hours. Job share arrangements may be considered.

 

Key responsibilities

  • Collaborate on the conduct and analysis of a realist review of interventions to improve the mental health of women who have experienced human trafficking.  
  • Collaborate on the analysis of qualitative data collected by the NIHR GHRG.
  • Collaborate in writing journal articles and developing public engagement materials for NGO partners, including training manuals and developing digital resources.
  • Contribute to the selection, modification, and testing of components of the package of support.

The above list of responsibilities may not be exhaustive, and the post holder will be required to undertake such tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be expected within the scope and grading of the post.

 

Skills, knowledge, and experience 

Essential criteria  

1.        PhD awarded or near completion, or equivalent professional qualifications and experience. 

2.       Experience of using theory-based approaches to reviews (e.g., realist reviews), intervention design, or intervention evaluation.  

3.       Track record of conducting high-quality academic research using qualitative methods.  

4.       Strong verbal communication skills. 

5.       Strong written communication skills, including communicating in plain English. 

6.       Demonstrable interest in violence against women/children and/or global mental health.  

 

Desirable criteria

1.        Experience working in low- and-middle-income countries and conflict settings.  

2.        Publications as first or senior author in peer-reviewed journals.  

3.        Experience of teaching and/or supervising junior researchers.  

4.        Experience of working in public engagement activities: developing training manuals, working with youth, and some experience of public engagement through digital media or games
