Department of Translation, Interpreting and Intercultural Studies

The Department was first established as the “Translation Programme” in 1990, and was awarded full independent departmental status in 2019. During our over 30-year history, we have built a reputation as a leading centre for teaching and research in Translation, Interpreting and Intercultural Studies, and were recently awarded a 4* (i.e. “world-leading”) ranking in the 2020 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) for Research Environment and Research Impact. The Department offers teaching at BA, MA and Research Postgraduate levels, and is among the most internationalised in the region, with an academic staff comprising members from Hong Kong, the Chinese Mainland, Taiwan, the UK, North Macedonia, Spain and Australia. The Programme has particular strengths in literary translation, minority cultures in translation, and interpreting, and is expanding its profile in the field of translation technology.

Lecturer II in Translation (PR0139/21-22)

All qualified applicants will be considered. Applicants should be able to teach a variety of courses, preferably in at least one of the following areas: translation technology, practical translation (for various fields), audiovisual translation, interpreting, or linguistics.  An excellent command of both Chinese and English is essential. Experience in the use of CAT tools and other translation technology will be considered favourably, as will additional expertise in a third language.

The appointee will undertake teaching at undergraduate and master’s levels as appropriate, and will be expected to make an active contribution to the teaching culture of the Department. They will also be expected to take on certain administrative duties.

Applicants should possess a master’s degree or above in Translation, Interpreting or other relevant fields, and should have teaching experience at the tertiary level. Industry experience of translation, interpreting, or related fields (e.g. localisation) will be considered an advantage.

Initial appointment will be made on a fixed-term contract of two years. Re-appointment thereafter is subject to good performance, mutual agreement and availability of funding.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
