NTNU has an opening for two positions as Associate professor at Department of education and lifelong learning at the Faculty of social and educational sciences. 

Department of Education and Lifelong Learning (IPL) is a knowledge environment for research, education and communication in the social sciences. The department contributes with research-based knowledge on childhood and adolescence, school, education and working life in a lifelong perspective. The department's fields of study and research are education, adult learning, counselling science and educational development and child research.

You will report to Head of department. 

Responsibilities 

  • The associate professors will contribute to research and teaching in interdisciplinary childhood studies. He/she will be part of the research environment in childhood studies at the Department of Education and Lifelong Learning (IPL). The candidates will develop their research agenda within the interdisciplinary field of childhood and youth research. They are expected to participate in collaborative research and apply for externally funded projects in the department. 
  • The qualified candidates will be involved in supervision, teaching theory, methodology and substantive courses at BA, MA, and Ph.D. levels at the departments study programs. 
  • We will prioritize applicants who develop research concerning children and young people in one or a combination of the following areas: early childhood care and education; health and well being; diversity and social inclusion; childhood and popular culture; children and media; children and family life; and intergenerational relationships. We value cross-cultural research approaches as well as methodologies that combine local and global perspectives on these themes.

Required qualifications 

You must have the qualifications required for the position of associate professor in the field as outlined in the regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts 

  • A Ph.D. in childhood studies or relevant social science and humanities from a Norwegian university or an equivalent foreign Ph.D. is a requirement. Your PhD, or comparable academic work, must be within social sciences (or a comparable relevant field). 
  • If you can document that you are in the final stages of your PhD studies, your application may also be considered. 
  • Qualified candidates are expected to teach and publish both in Norwegian and English languages. 

You must document relevant basic competency in teaching and supervision at a University/College level (ref. regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts). If this cannot be documented, you will be required to complete an approved course in university pedagogy within two years of commencement. NTNU offers qualifying courses.

It is a prerequisite that new employees who do not currently speak a Scandinavian language be able to, within three years, demonstrate skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language equivalent to level three of the course for Norwegian for speakers of other languages at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU.  

Preferred qualifications

  • The Department of Education and Lifelong Learning would like to strengthen research and education about childhoods in Nordic and global contexts. Prior experience in teaching, supervision, and research in higher education institutions focusing on childhood and youth is beneficial. 
  • Qualifications and experiences in international research networks, editorial work, engagement in policy and practice, and obtaining externally financed projects are advantages.
  • Applicants with research experience in qualitative and ethnographic research are encouraged to apply for this position.

Salary and conditions

A position as Associate professor (code 1011) will typically receive a gross salary of between NOK 553 500 – NOK 702 100 per year, depending on qualifications and seniority. As required by law, 2 % of this salary will be deducted and paid into the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

Employment will be granted in accordance with the principles outlined in the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. Applicants should be aware that there may be changes in the working environment after employment has commenced.

It is a prerequisite that you are able to be present and accessible at the institution daily.

About the application

Your application and description of the academic works that will form the basis for assessment must be in English or a Scandinavian language. 

Please note that your application will be considered based solely on information submitted by the application deadline. You must therefore ensure that your application clearly demonstrates how your skills and experience fulfil the criteria specified above.

If you have been on academic leave or experienced other gaps in your career, it is important that this be made clear in your application, so the recruitment board can take this into account, and that the quantity of your research may have been reduced as a result.

Your application must include:

  • A cover letter describing the motivation for applying for the position, along with an indication of how you will contribute to developing teaching and research in childhood studies at IPL/NTNU and beyond
  • CV and diplomas
  • A teaching portfolio, in which your teaching competence is compiled and presented systematically, (see guidelines for applicants: Documentation of teaching qualifications in applications and appointments to academic positions at NTNU
  • Academic works – published or unpublished – that you wish to be considered during assessment of your application (max 10 works)
  • A description of the scientific/artistic works you consider most relevant, and which you particularly wish to be factored into the assessment
  • A list of your previous works, with details on where they have been published
  • A research plan
  • Details of projects for which you have served as project manager, including information on financing, duration, and scope
  • Names and contact information for three relevant references

Group work will also be considered. If it is difficult to identify your specific input to a group project, you must include evidence of your contributions.

While considering the best-qualified applicants, we will pay particular attention to personal qualities, your motivation for applying for the position, and your pedagogical skills and qualifications. Our assessment will be based on documented pedagogical material, forms of presentation in your academic works, teaching experience, PhD, and Masters supervision, and any other relevant pedagogical background. Both quality and scope will be taken into consideration.

NTNU is required to oblige by the evaluation criteria for research quality in accordance with The San Fransisco Declaration on Research Assessment – DORA. This means that we will pay particular attention to the quality and academic range demonstrated by your scientific work to date. We will also pay attention to research leadership and participation in research projects. Your scientific work from the last five years will be given the most weight.

A committee of experts will consider your application. Candidates of interest will be invited to a trial lesson and an interview.
