Position overview

The Australian National University (ANU) is a global university that consistently ranks among the world’s finest. Its distinct intellectual capacity is reflected in 95% of its research output being ranked above world standard. This research excellence contributes to the social, economic and human capital of the nation. ANU is located in Canberra, Australia’s capital and is a partner to the Australian government and a resource for its people.

One of the reasons ANU stands apart from other universities is its ability to look beyond the day to day and address some of the biggest problems facing the world.

The ANU is a node of the ARC Centre of Excellence in Synthetic Biology. The ARC Centre of Excellence in Synthetic Biology (CoESB) will provide the technical innovation critical for Australia to develop a vibrant bioeconomy building on the nation’s strengths in agriculture. For thousands of years we have used microbes to create bread, wine, cheese. Now, our Centre will pioneer new approaches to the design of synthetic microbes, enabling the development of custom-designed microbial communities, synthetic organelles and new to nature biological pathways and enzymes. CoESB will combine engineering with molecular biology to design and construct novel biological systems that can convert biomass from agriculture or waste streams to biofuel, bioplastics and other high-value chemicals.

The ANU CoESB Node is seeking to recruit a talented and motivated early-career academic to join us. This new position will be complemented by a cohort of PhD students and will work synergistically on the goals of the centre. The ANU CoESB Node is now advertising one Research Fellow positions located at the Research Schools of Chemistry to work on the development of novel enzymes, sensors and compartments for synthetic biology. This positions will work synergistically with the other nodes of the CoESB.

The desired applicant should have experience in protein crystallography, molecular dynamics, protein engineering, and bioinformatics.

Research School of Chemistry

The Research School of Chemistry (RSC) was founded in 1967. Last year, the School’s 50th anniversary provided the opportunity to celebrate the RSC’s research and teaching excellence. The School divides its research into the following themes: Chemical Biology, Synthetic Chemistry and Materials Chemistry. The RSC has 47 academic and 34 professional staff and more than 800 undergraduate and postgraduate students. From late 2013, the School has been accommodated in new, state-of-the-art laboratories with excellent facilities and resources for chemical research.
