Research Assistant, Architecture

Employer
NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF SINGAPORE
Location
Singapore
Closing date
13 Oct 2021

We are looking for a full-time (5 days a week, 8 hours) Research Assistant for 12 to 30 months appointment to commence in July 2020 or as soon as possible.

The project attempts to study the effectiveness of active noise control in enhancing the sound transmission loss of a plenum chamber and aperture.

The active control method is undoubtedly an essential add-in for improving the acoustic performance of such settings in buildings because such destructive cancellation can theoretically result in a very low sound level overall. A thorough understanding of the sound fields transmitted into another side and inside the chamber and aperture and their coupling are required before a more sophisticated system can be derived. This forms the major objective of the present study.

The specific aims of the proposed project are the following:

  • Developing a numerical model (Finite Element Method or others) to understand better the theoretical extents and limits of the active noise control in plenum chamber and aperture;
  • Developing an experimental study and testing adaptive control algorithms, including building the real-time control system;
  • Acquiring a fundamental understanding of the control methods and performance and active noise control; and
  • Developing improved sound isolation systems using active noise control.

This proposed project involves diverse theoretical as well as applied facets of numerical and experimental acoustics. This position will be responsible for the numerical simulation and experimental tasks as well as computer-testing, laboratory-testing, and field-testing. This position will participate in the development of active sound transmission control.  S/he will also assist in other aspects of the research and dissemination of the results.  The candidates are preferred to register for research degree programme (e.g. PhD or Master by research).
