Job description

Are you an enthusiastic and ambitious researcher who has interests in Quantum Thermodynamics?

The School of Mathematics and Physics, are seeking a highly motivated Research Fellow to undertake theoretical research on Quantum Thermodynamics for the duration of 18 months from 1 November 2021 to no later than 30th June 2023  (the exact starting date can be discussed).

The successful candidate will become a member of the Quantum Technology group at Queen’s University Belfast (QTeQ) [http://web.am.qub.ac.uk/wp/qo/], where they will work within the international team led by G. De Chiara, A. Ferraro, and M. Paternostro. The group is part of the School of Mathematics and Physics which holds the prestigious Silver award of the Athena SWAN charter for advancement of gender equality. 

This post will be funded by an EPSRC grant entitled ”Quantum Many-Body Engines” awarded to Dr. Gabriele De Chiara. The project will be conducted in collaboration with experimental groups working on ultracold atomic setups with the aim of designing and realising experimentally quantum thermodynamic machines. The successful candidate must have, and you should clearly demonstrate this in your CV/Cover letter:

  • Normally have or be about to obtain a PhD in physics.
  • At least 3 years relevant research experience to include:
    • Undertaking research in theoretical physics (including postgraduate level).
    • A proven track record of designing microscopic models to carry out analyses, critical evaluations.
    • Working effectively as part of a research team in the development and promotion of the research theme.  

Fixed term contract posts are available for the stated period in the first instance but in particular circumstances may be renewed subject to availability of funding.
