Job description

The School of Population Health & Environmental Sciences is seeking to appoint an International Tutor to manage the Health and Society Course for incoming Study Abroad students interested in learning about the practice of medicine and undertaking further study at medical schools or in the allied health professions (  https://www.kcl.ac.uk/abroad/study-in-london/health-society).    

 

The post holder will plan, coordinate and contribute to the delivery of the Health and Society Course. The role involves a combination of teaching in the form of workshops and seminars, and administration involving developing and planning the teaching schedule, and maintaining contacts with the clinicians who provide students with clinical shadowing off campus. The role also provides academic and pastoral support to all students registered on the Health and Society Course. 

The post holder will ideally have some administrative and educational experience in a higher education institution, preferably within the field of Medical Education. 

 

Ideally, the post holder would be: 

 

•         Qualified to Masters level in Medical Education, Social Sciences or Human Sciences 

•         Available to provide some teaching in the fields of Health Psychology, Medical Anthropology, Medical Humanities, Healthcare Management or Medical Sociology, or basic Clinical Skills 

•         Available to provide general course management

 

This post will be offered on an indefinite contract. 

This is a part-time post (14 hours) - 40% full time equivalent

 

Key responsibilities

Communication and Networking  

• Develop and maintain external networks, for example clinical shadowing contacts, and contribute to student recruitment, and build relationships for future activities 
• Liaise with website team to keep content updated and engaging 
• Liaise on a regular basis with administrative support, current students and contacts within King’s College London (i.e. KCL admissions, KCL Study Abroad and the Public Health Examinations Board) 

 

Decision Making, Planning and Problem Solving

• Identify the need for developing the content and structure of the course module with colleagues, and make proposals on how this should be achieved 
• Take responsibility for the design and setting of assessment methods. Collaborate with colleagues on the implementation of assessment procedures. Address issues affecting the quality of delivery, referring more serious matters to others, as appropriate. 

 

Service Delivery

• Welcome new students to the course and to run a course welcome and farewell
• Organisation of speakers/teachers for the on-campus teaching schedule, and the delivery of additional sessions as necessary or in areas where the post holder has appropriate special interests that fit the scope and remit of the course  
• Organisation of clinical and other healthcare-related attachments and visits for the students in conjunction with the teaching administrator  
• Management of the course budget and payments to clinical shadowing providers and visiting teachers (in conjunction with Finance Manager and School Manager) 
• Assess prospective applications and make unconditional or conditional offers, as well as waiting list or rejection decisions as and when appropriate 
• Liaise with the Public Health Examinations Board Chair with regards to assessment, mitigation and progression issues.
• Co-ordinate the work of others to ensure the module is delivered to the required standard 
• Be responsible for administrative duties in areas such as admissions, timetabling, student assessment, and student attendance 

 

Analysis and Research

• Be responsible for the quality assurance of the programme 
• Address issues affecting the quality of delivery, referring more serious matters to others, as appropriate. 

 

Teamwork, Teaching & Development

• Act as a responsible team member, leading the course and developing productive working relationships with other members of staff 
• Coordinate the work of colleagues in identifying and responding to the needs of students 
• Design teaching material and deliver workshops and seminars within a particular subject area (e.g., Health Psychology, Medical Anthropology, Medical Humanities, Healthcare Management or Medical Sociology, or basic Clinical Skills) 
• Supervise student assignments (essays and presentations) 
• Identify and act on areas where current provision is in need of revision or improvement 
• Contribute to the planning, design, and development of objectives and materials 
• Set, mark and assess assignments and provide feedback to students 
• Gather meaningful feedback from students and use this for quality assurance and improvement of the course

Pastoral Care

• Commit to enhancing Equality & Diversity, as well as to the principles of the Athena Swan Charter  
• Act as a course module tutor for incoming Study Abroad students 
• Be responsible for pastoral care of all Study Abroad students registered to the Health and Society course 

 

Knowledge, Experience & Skills

• Possess sufficient breadth and depth of specialist knowledge in the discipline to develop the teaching programme and the provision of learning support 
• Use a range of delivery techniques to enthuse, engage and instruct students

Skills, knowledge, and experience 

Essential criteria  

1.       First degree in life/health sciences or social sciences 

2.       Broad understanding of Medical Education and Health Service issues relevant to Primary and Secondary Care 

3.       Excellent interpersonal and communication skills 

4.       Excellent IT skills 

5.       Excellent organizational skills 

6.       Experience of course development and evaluation 

7.       Experience of undergraduate teaching in a higher education institution, preferable within the field of Medical Education 

8.       Experience supervising student assignments 

9.       Ability to work both independently and as a team member

Desirable criteria

1.       Masters level qualification in relevant discipline

The School of Population Health & Environmental Science’s research comprises Analytics (broadly defined as the discovery and interpretation of meaningful patterns in quantitative and qualitative data), Investigation (broadly exploring analytical solutions to complex problems at the individual as well as population level) and Applied Research (broadly using analytics, including laboratory investigations, to identify needs and propose and evaluate new solutions to global societal health and social problems). This informs our approach and focus to developing and conducting research that addresses major questions, such as long-term conditions, multiple morbidity, and environmental impacts on population health.   

 

This is an exciting time to join the Department and the School as we will soon merge with the existing School of Life Course Sciences. This will bring together very considerable clinical, scientific, and population/global health strengths. There are already many examples of joint working and collaboration between the two Schools, and it is envisaged that there will be significant opportunities to collaborate further and draw upon the critical mass of clinical, methodological, and applied researchers in the new, integrated School. The School will be one of the largest in the Faculty with strong links to the NIHR BRC and NIHR Applied Research Collaboration and with King’s Health Partners Clinical Academic Groups and Institutes, with the enormous potential to further leverage these synergies.
