About the Role

This role sits within the Dynamics, Simulation and Control (DSC) group within the Aeronautics centre which is one of the leading research groups for flight dynamics and control along with aero-servo-elasticity in the United Kingdom and conducts research and consultancy work on the dynamics, stability and control of all types of air vehicle and other engineering systems. The Group performs both theoretical and experimental work with leading industrial partners as well as working with SMEs. World-leading research is conducted in both blue-sky conceptual areas and practical applications. Staff collaborate with industrial partners as well as with other research groups in Cranfield and internationally.

The group run a set of 3 flight simulators; additional facilities available to the group include various wind tunnels, an air traffic control simulator and the fully instrumented aircraft of the NLFC and their pilots.

The successful candidate will be contributing to the delivery of research projects through software development, design and execution of scenarios in the flight simulators and reporting the research findings.  The role is also responsible for the management of software packages being developed in the group. This includes the management of flight simulator software as well as other modelling and simulation tools being developed in the group.

About You

With a PhD (or close to completion) in a subject area related to either Aerospace Engineering or Computing Sciences (or equivalent), ideally with a subject focus in aircraft systems or flight dynamics modelling or flight simulation, you will also have a strong track record in software development, focusing on modelling and simulation of complex systems (such as aircraft).  You will focus in this role on the delivery of commissioned work that uses and develops the engineering flight simulators and will be required to work with the group’s academic staff to deliver industry-sponsored research.  Therefore, relevant knowledge and experience in technical areas in modelling and simulation, flight control, human-machine interfaces and experimental testing is required as well as excellent communication, problem-solving and planning & organization skills.
