Are you passionate about developing smart, sustainable and resilient engineering solutions? Do you have expertise in the areas of maritime, acoustic or control engineering?   Can you inspire others to address society’s future needs? Then the School of Engineering is the place to make a real difference. A world-renowned centre for education, research and enterprise, we have brand new, world-class facilities, a vibrant academic community and excellent collaborative opportunities across the School.

This is an opportunity for an academic with an interest in Maritime Engineering, especially in maritime structures and design, Acoustic Engineering, especially in underwater acoustics, or Control Engineering, especially in mechatronics and robotics, to contribute to the evolution of our successful teaching and research.

Engineering at Southampton has a strong international reputation for high quality research and as part of the wider Faculty of Engineering & Physical Sciences was ranked top in research power in the UK for General Engineering in the latest Research Excellence Framework (REF). Due to its reputation for excellence in education and research it has partnered with Harbin Engineering University (HEU), China to deliver a Joint Education Institute at HEU. Part of your role will be to help shape and deliver this exciting new initiative.

Applications are invited from those interested in a balanced research and education post or in a more education focused role.

If you are an Acoustical or Control Engineer, you will be part of the world-renown Institute of Sound and Vibration Research which has been at the forefront of sound and vibration since its inception nearly 60 years ago. You will have access to our excellent specialist acoustics and vibration testing facilities and also to the wider facilities in the School of Engineering, such as our towing tanks, and opportunities to forge collaborations across the wider Faculty of Engineering and Physics Science.

Engineering education specialists will be encouraged and supported to develop innovative approaches to engineering education delivery, working in collaboration with others across the university such as our Centre for Higher Education Practice. Our opportunities for career development and promotion for teaching specialists match those for our more research-focussed colleagues. Your contribution will shape the direction of our engineering programmes, by inspiring our students to meet society’s future needs in a sustainable manner.

To succeed in one of these challenging roles, you will need a relevant PhD (or equivalent professional qualifications and experience), a recognised HE teaching qualification and a track-record of published research or education development. Highly organised, with strong communication skills, you’ll be ready to manage and motivate others. This is a full time permanent post with a requirement to spend 6 months per year working in Harbin, China at our Joint Education Institute with Harbin Engineering University (HEU). During the annual period spent at HEU, you will undertake teaching, student support and programme management roles in partnership with staff from HEU. You will be joined periodically by members of our ‘flying faculty’ teaching team. There will also be opportunities to work on programme development (education focussed appointments) or to undertake research (balanced appointments). Accommodation in China will be provide free of charge during your stay. Duties during the period when you are not in China will be managed to give you every opportunity to meet your career ambitions.

Join us and we’ll encourage you to shape a role that’s tailored to your interests and makes the most of your unique perspective. We believe equality and diversity are fundamental to creativity and innovation, in turn enabling us to develop and grow towards our strategic ambitions.

As a university with an Athena SWAN silver award we are recognised for our commitment to improving equality for all in science and engineering, so we’ll help you find a good work/life balance. Our comprehensive benefits package also includes a contributory pension scheme, generous holiday allowance, subsidised health and fitness facilities, a cycle-to-work scheme, access to childcare facilities close to our UK campus and a range of discounts.
